Here is the product I recommend. I just order to biggest one from amazon and use them among all my tanks.

A dechlorinator is something that removes the small amounts of chlorine that are put into tap water to make it safe for drinking as it damages fish. Prime also helps control the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, which is why I love using it

You should check your water providers web page to see your General Hardness levels and PH. This will tell you which fish will thrive in your tap water. Some fish like a lot of minerals, others lime softer and more acidic water.

ok when i do change the water out.....do i remove 50 or 75% of the water? us algae bad for fish?

For the first, do about 75%. For the others 50% should be fine if you don't want to keep that kind of volume every change. Algae actually absorbs extra nutrients from the water. It is neither good nor bad, although most people do not like it. You can simply scrub it off with an aquarium sponge if you don't want it.

The only kind of algae I seem to be able to grow is the ugly hair algae, which is a pain to get rid of. I would prefer the soft green stuff for my grazing fish.

I do water changes once a week, more often for tanks under 10 gallons. On an uncycled tank, I would change the water every day or every other day. The one time I, accidentally, did a fish in cycle I performed daily water changes.
