Getting A Betta! :d

personaly i would shop around to find a stunning betta, 2-3 african dwarf frogs, maybe around 4 cherry shrimp, and some otos (although i would be tempted to put in 2 albino cory)

and an apple snail for good measure!

really?? you think that would be ok in this tank?? and dont you need more than just 2 cory's??

Cory's are sociable fish who do like to live in groups. They can also grow large and have a long lifespan. Personally i would consider pygmy cory's in a tank that size :good:

ok so how about...

The best looking betta i can get my hands on!! :p and 4 cory's? is that to much or is there room for more? i.e. shrimp.....

Hi.
I would say thats the max for that tank :good: Its not just swimming space but floor space with the cory's.

Not wanting to put a damper on it, but cory's do like water flow and the larger finned bettas normally dont! If you can find a way of diverting flow to a specific area they would all be happy

That could be easier said than done. I might have to keep it simple at first then maybe add cories or otos after.

Ah, I think thats the one that trickles the water out from abov the tank??? In that case dont worry about diverting it :good:

yeah, you'd have no problems with this amount

shrimp contribute almost nothing to the bio load, as do snails, same to a large extent with ADF
Cory do better in large numbers sure, but i keep 3 albino cory in my community and they are perky and happy
providing you do weekly 30-50% water changes it's fine

I found that when i had snails they were the No. one ###t makers in my tank, when i removed them it was heaven as i didn't have to do so many changes.

I would go for the betta and a group of pigmy corry, they would look lovely in that size tank.

Keep us posted on what you decide and remember we like lots of pics lol :p

Ok i have a couple more questions!! :p

Obviously i have to cycle the new tank and it will be fishless so my question is what would be the easiest/best way to cycle it?

I already have another tank established and has been for about a year so im currently running the filter for the new tank in there to build up the bacteria. Problem with this is im a little unsure if i still need to add the amonia when i transfer the filter or can add the filter and fish when the filter is established?

Alway get a little nervous when it comes to things like this....

well Id take a bit of the old filter and squeeze it into the new one and then let it run for a while on your establised tank. then take your new filter and place on new tank, just to make sure it is cycled correctly add the pure ammonina and then test to see how long it takes the ammonia and nitrite to go to zero, if after so many hours..think its like 12 the A and the NI are zero and the NitrAte is coming up...your tank is cycled and you can add your fish.

there are more concise and better written things in the new to the hobby thread though....I would read read read up on it over there.

oh and congadulations on doing it fishless to start out.

Thanks newfishy, i did a fishless cycle on my big tank but with that i had nothing but a bottle of ammonia to start with.

When you say run it for a while how long do you mean? 1,2,3 day or a week or more? Like i said ive not done it this way so a little unsure. Just dont want to get it wrong.
