I added a male German blue ram to tank about 3 weeks ago. It was doing well but never seemed interested in interacting with the other fish. It was the only cichlid in the tank so I decided to add another male German blue ram. The original blue ram wanted nothing to do with the new blue ram and would swim away when the new one approached. After 3 days the original ram stopped eating and the next day was dead. I didn't see any sign of injury to the ram. Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Thanks

They are a tough fish to keep and usually need pretty exact requirements to thrive and sometimes even just survive.

What is your water like? Mainly interested in Nitrate level, ph and hardness and temperature. Blue Rams generally need soft water with a ph under 7 with pretty much 0 Nitrate and higher temperatures around 28c. Outside of that and unexplained deaths after a few weeks or months is reasonably common.

nitrate or nitrite? nitrite can also be bad for fish..

Well both... nitrite needs to be zero on all tanks but some communities can be ok with up to 20 or sometimes a bit more but under 20 is recommended but rams need it to be as close to zero as possible similar to discus really

You had a male ram and added a second male ram and 3 days later the original fish stopped eating and died.

Rams and all cichlids are territorial and adding a second male to a tank with an established male is going to cause problems. If the second male was bigger and more aggressive, it might have bullied the first ram to death. It also might have introduced a disease that killed the first one.

Pictures of the fish and tank?
How big is the tank?
How long has the tank been set up for?

How often do you do water changes and how much do you change?
Do you gravel clean the substrate when you do a water change?
Do you dechlorinate the new water before it's added to the tank?

What sort of filter is on the tank?
How often and how do you clean the filter?

Did you do anything to the tank on the day before the fish died?
Did you add anything to the tank in the 2 weeks before it died (besides the second male ram)?
