I am not really interested in breeding Bettas. But I wanted to add a CD for my Book about The Personalities of Betta Fish that would show a male and a female Betta in their mating process. So i set up a nice 20 gallon tank for them to breed in. Put the male in first and let him see the femal for a week or 2 and he blew a big bubble nest. Then I set the Cam recorder up to catch a large area of the center of the tank with plans to aim it more accurately to the point where they started mating. So I put the female in the tank with the male, and started recording.

The female instantly swam along side of the male and stoped at his side. The male swam away. The female strated chasing after him and stopped when she got up to him again but he again swam away. The female chased after him but he didn't want any part of her so he swam to one end of the tank with her in close chase and hed turn around and swim back to the other end with her in close chase.

This went on for about 10 minutes when finally he got pissed and he started to chase her and he WAS mad. So I got affraid that he might hurt her and removed her from the tank. When I reviewed what the Camera caught it was pretty funny. All you see is a male swimming into view from left to right, and then out of view with the female right behind him. Then seconds later you see him swimming into view from right to left and then out of view with her right be hind him. And this goes on for about 10 minutes until I stopped the camera to get her out of there.

I understand there is a little rough foreplay before they mate but I wasn't taking any chances on her getting hurt. Clearly she wanted it but he didn't. Made me wonder though if maybe my Male was gay. LOL! :)

That was my only atempt at mating Bettas. I just don't have the heart to watch one beat up on another. I love these wonderful LOVING Bettas so much that I keep a live net cam on them all day so I watch over them while I'm at work. And they do really love spending quality time with us. I've had a few Bettas that will crawl right into my hand and let me pet them like a dog so long as I keep my hand in the water. But petting and touching them is not good for them as it removes their protective slime coat.

Interesting.....you can keep a pair of bettas together( not always) but with some. Sometimes the female can do more damage to the male than the other way around which has recently happened to me. If you keep the male and female separated for a few weeks and they can still see each other then pairing them off becomes very easy. I have 3 pairs now and 2 tanks with 1 male and several females in together. They are great to watch and all are little individuals with their own special characters. I keep finding new things about some of them that are quite out of the norm for bettas and I think I have a gay male too

Just to be a moaner here :D
Are you sure its a good idea to breed bettas just for the sake of a CD??
What about all the fry you could end up with??

I was prepared for the fry had I got any. With 7 10 gallon tanks and a Betta in each one for 10 years I had accumulated many many cups to put them in. Also had a deal with Petland to take the baby Bettas for sale. I used to go in there store almost daily to change the water in the Betta cups for them at no charge. I love these guys so much.

Wow....That is VERY interesting. I would love to try to put a male and a female to live together in a 20 gallon tank. I have a male and a female now in sweperate tanks that flirt with each other all day and have been doing that since I got the baby boy about two weeks ago after my old buddy Whisper died. To be honest, though, I'd be too affraid of them hurting each other and maybe starting to fight while I'm not home to seperate them. I'm even to affraid to experiment with this or I would have done it before. But it is fantastic that you have done this. Now, you just need to find another gay male to room with your first one. :)

Maybe they arnt gay, perhaps they like you too much that they have pair with you already xD

Nice story xD
I love betta and want more xD

My main betta tank contains 27 females and 2 males,- all living very happily together with no signs of aggression or fin nipping. The tank is heavily planted and they all swim around together, but have lots of places to chill out on their own when required! The two males 'live' at opposite ends of the tanks, but regularly meet up in the middle and take no notice of each other at all! :D

Here's a photo showing both the boys:

That is amazing and absolutely fantastic. You do have a Green Thumb for Bettas. :) That is really cool. I would love to have a tank like that. How big is your tank? Do you introduce them to the tank all at once or some other method? Do they mate whenever they feel like it?

Really cool fuzzynicki. :) Good handle too, Nicky is my real name.

:D

The tank is a Juwel Vision 260 litre. It was originally a gourami tank, with one female angel fish and longfin bn plecos. I'd had the gourami for years. As there numbers finally dwindled down I decided to go for a change. I'd kept bettas about 20yrs ago,- but not in recent years at all. I set up a 20 litre tank for a male. I then went to my lfs and bought 6 females for the sorority tank. (2 of these turned out to be boys!) I then bought a breeding pair from e-bay and added them to the tank. I was obviously concerned about keeping a male with females, but had researched and read numerous stories saying that it was possible depending on the character of the fish and the size and density of plants within the tank. (I didn't know at the time there was already a male in the tank lol) The following females have all been added in various amounts at varies times over the year. 3 of the females are giants. There's never been any sign of any aggravation at all.

To add to all of this the tank still also contains a large female angel fish and a large female moonlight gourami. I've read so many people saying that it's impossible to keep gouramis or angels with bettas,- but mine go to prove that this isn't always the case. I have such a peaceful community within the tank and I love them every one! :D
