Hey I have a 20 gallon tank that I have had for over a year now. I had 2 gold fish in it for about 8 months. They got really big, like 5 and 9 inches long.
We decided to buy a new tank, we got a 55 gallon tank, which is just beautiful. We filled it up and let it sit over night. We added the jumpstar bacteria, and tap water conditioner.
We decided to test it the new tank 24 hours after filling it up to get it cycling, and we tried it on our gold fish. Needless to say it didnt work out to well. In the first 48 hours the smaller goldfish was dead from a fungus infection. He had white cotton like growth on him, and didnt make it. The bigger one was showing similar signs as well of the same sickness.
We went to a local pet store, I mean local, not a petsmart, and asked for help. The guy said that Maracyn Plus was the cure. We dumped it in the tank 24 hours ago, and it did seem to help.The cotton like stuff is gone, but the fish is still hanging in there, but he looks to be a gonner soon. He is at the top of the tank gasping for air, and not eating.
So my main question is how long will that fungus stuff be in the tank, and what should be the proper method for sterilizing the tank before adding more fish?
And just so that we are on the same page, Ive added ph down to the tank about 3 times so far because my ph was registering very high. I tested the ph tester in different tank water and found out that it is broke, and wasnt reading right at all, so now the ph might be to low. I have added an existing tank filter from a different tank, about 5 gallons of previous tank water, a 5 gallon filtered water change.
The tank is mildly cloudy at the moment, I believe its from all the chemicals, but I just want to make sure the tank is safe before adding more fish.
