I am currently cycling my 55g tank and have been for about 3 weeks. i'm not sure how long it has been there, but there are a few little bubble like things growing on my driftwood. they are a tannish color. can anyone tell me what these things are?

They are bubbles, simple as that. I have quite a bit of bogwood and mopani in my tanks and even after soaking and boiling as the advice tells you it will still release the odd bubble and tannins into the water. Just had a quick look and my two foot mopani has a bubble or two on it now. Once you have cycled and got fish swimming around you wont notice them very often as the fish disturb them and they float up and go pop :p however you may find a slight stain to your water, but this is usually believed to be good as most fish would experience this in the wild anyway.

OK thanks, they were just worrying me a little.
