I have just bought my fish some frozen food. 4 packets as part of a deal so I got one of each. I have a community tank with Gourami, Molly, Tetra, Silver shark, glass catfish and guppy. Will the following foods be ok or should any be avoided?

Bloodworm
Daphnia
Shrimp
Quintet

Never used frozen foods before so dont know what I am doing. They are in like an ice cube tray. Do you need to defrost or heat it or just drop a solid portion in?
Also how often should I feed this as I am feeding topical flake twice a day at the min and dont want them to get too used to the frozen stuff and not eat the flakes. Should I use it just as a treat once a week or every other day??

Thanks.

Heard of the first 3 and yes atleast there all fine :)

1) Feeding twice daily is excessive, once it plenty and will reduce pollution :)

2) Feed your flakes 5/6 days a week and a little frozen once or twice :)

3) No need to defrost, just chuck it in and it'll defrost and sink in no time.

I know a lot of people defrost their frozen food before they feed it. I never have and my fish have done just fine. The fish seem to get to it and it's less of a mess when it all stays together anyway.

I feed flakes at about mid-day and mid-night. Is this too much. I only give them enough so that they go wild and its all gone before any hit the bottom. Its good fun watching them eat! lol. I thought as it was coming up to christmas and to give them a varied diet I would treat them.

Sounds acceptable to me.

The annoying thing is with those frozen bloodworm is the size of the compartments they come in.My fish can only handle one or two bloodworm at a time so i end up using about 20 bloodoworm then having to throw the rest of the defrosted compartment away.I can't re-freeze for fear of a bloody freezer :D

+1

At 1.70 per pack im not gona loose sleep over it though :)

They may go mad for the food but doesnt mean it wont polute your water :) it can be done but its just my (and many others) recommendation to keep food to a minimal.

The frozen is a nice treat but no more then once or twice a week :) too much fatty protein isnt good.

Even though at times it's annoying, saying "as much as they can eat in 2 minutes" tends to hold true. I personally only feed once a day because that's all they need. I simply put in some flakes that they eat fairly quickly, then some shrimp pellets, or algae wafers that they can eat over a little bit more time.

i feed my fish frozen food pretty much every day. i vary it between mysis schrimp, brine schrimp, beef heart, bloodworms and tubifex worms. just a little with some tropical granules for a staple. i chop up the cubes to bite size frozen bits, throw a couple pieces in each tank and throw in a pinch of the granules.

Wouldnt be a good idea unless all the fish were carnivorous.

so will they eat a whole compartment of food or will it all go to the bottom and pollute the water?

Depends on how hungry they are. I have never, and i mean never, seen a fish decline a Brine Shrimp before, unless they are very sick! SO that is about the only thing you hav e a problem feeding. I have never heard of quintent.

i ALWAYS defrost my food first by placing it in a little warm water then pour some in a little at a time, my platties tend to loose interest if it just floats around for ages then hits the ground in a million pieces, but i agree with only feeding them frozen once a week, my fish poo about ten times more after frozen food so the filters are on overtime.

just my experience

If you think a whole cube is too much, palce the frozen cube on a paper bag or such, get a sharp knife and carefully chop it into 4. Then you can keep the little chunks in the freezer and feed accordingly :D

I defrost mine before use in some tank water, but I manage a whole cube in one go, over all my tanks :D

are the cubes that big? for mine fishes, a 1.5cm x 1.5cm x 1cm cube of frozen blood worm is barely enough  some people prefer defrosting, others just go ahead feeding, it depends on you. normally i hold a cube and dip it into my tanks, lift it up, and dip again, this way you get the defrosted worms out into the water
