Congrats on getting your first Betta

You can get Hikari Betta Gold pellets from most aquatic shops which are very good for Bettas. They tend not to really go for fish flakes. We feed ours Attisons Betta Pro which we buy from ebay. You get a really big pot of it and would probably last you a year with just the one Betta.

It depends very much on your Betta's temperament as to whether he would allow anything else to occupy his territory. Tetras are know to be fin nippers and not really a good match. Again with the shrimp.....he may ignore them or they may become his next meal!!!! Some people keep Ottos or pygmy corys with Bettas and have had no problems, but if you add anything you need to have a back up if it doesn't work out.

Thank you for your replies! I need advice, and am glad I came here! In both the places I have been looking at fish, both have said the neons and shrimp will be fine in with him! Damn them!! lol. I will have a look next time I go and see what they have. I really am new to this so when I go in there, I tend to go straight to the tanks with pretty fish in... lol. my tank is 35 litres, do you think i can fit much in there? I don't want to make it crowded and annoy my betta. he seems very lively at the moment, using all areas of the tank.

i used to have shrimp in with some of my bettas but now they are alone, they must lke to eat shrimp?

How often will i need to feed my betta? How often do you feed? and do you watch to see that they've eaten the food?

We feed 3-4 pellets twice a day, every day. Then once a week they get live bloodworm/daphnia/brineshrimp. If you can't get live then you can get frozen which come in blister packs. If you're just feeding the one Betta then you can just cut a small piece off and put the rest back in the freezer. Then just let it defrost before feeding.

Any uneaten food must be removed straight away as it will pollute the water. Generally ours eat all that they're given so there isn't usually any left in the tank to clean out.
