Fluval Spec Work In Progress

I've got 10 RCS coming this Friday (cheers Steve :good: ) and am wondering whether I should move the Amamnos into my other tank before then or leave them and see how it goes? I'm not sure if the Amamnos are full size yet either and am wondering if the Spec might be a bit small for them long term anyway, what do you think?

Cheers

Jon

We have a spec sat in a cuboard at work, we had it set up marine with sexy shrimp and zoanthid polyps, looked great, ran it with the equipment it came with, changed 50% once a week and had to top up with fresh water every day. The evapouration is huge but hardly surprising on such a small tank...

I dont think i saw, are you running this with a heater or not? Im really tempted to try it  I mean... how can anyone possibly not find space for/complain about a tank so small!

I think i would want one of the pink german ramshorn snails, been eyeballing them for months now lol. Bumble Bee Shrimp (or black and white crystals)... and i know i would want cryptocoryne nevelli and pogestemon helferi.. i'd love hemianthus but not under than light... and i dont know enough about moss lol would have to research it a bit...

Oh no! Look what you've done...

I have kept amanos and cherry's together for about 5 years, and never had any problems. I know many people who also have done the same. They do squabble over food sometimes, but never fight to the death!

Go on you know you want to :)

I'm not using a heater as the temperature in the house is pretty stable. If filled to the brim I only need to top up once or maybe twice a week.

I love the mossy look in tanks and the shrimp love it too, I think I'm going to replace the Riccia on the pebbles at the front with some more moss.

Cheers Ian, I think I'll leave them where they are then as they seem very happy in there, I read something the other day stating they needed quite a large tank, and that was what worried me more than them eating the Cherries.

I think so long as they are well fed, the amanos will beok... i'd be more worried about potential baby cherry shrimp though. Seen amanos decimate an entire pack of live bloodworm... if they were let loose on baby shrimps... ehhn

Thanks for the reply, hopefully some of the babies will find somewhere to hide if the Amanos do decide they are a tasty treat, which reminds me I must get some filter sponge to put over the filter intake to stop them getting stuck in the filter.

Cheers

Mate if you have sponge before your filter then if they go in the compartment they'll just grow and you can chuck them in the main part everytime you clean your filter, I fished out 12 from my external yesterday lol.

Evening All,

I've got some Pelia on it's way in the post which is going to replace the Riccia on the pebbles at the front so I'll post some new tank shots when that's here and done.

Cheers

Looking good mate. The pics are superb. I'm about to set up one of these tanks... :D Strangely enough i am really excited about it! No idea why as tanks this size are a PITA to get looking good. You are one of the few that have actually pulled it off.

Thanks for the kind words Minnnt it's much appreciated.

I'm finding the biggest PITA is removing/rearranging things in the tank due to it's small size, I've just ordered a set of long tweezers so that should make things much easier.

What are your plans for the Spec?

Cheers

Jon

No idea, that's where I was hoping you would chime in. Lol! Do they come with heaters?

No they don't come with a heater mate you can get one that fits in the filter compartment I think it's a preset one made by Hydor, mine stays at a pretty constant 20/21 though so I've not bothered.

Whatever you decide for the scape I think due to the shape of the tank you definitely need some height to it, maybe do away with the lid and try and find a nice piece of Redmoor that will protrude from the top of the tank, I'm guessing your going for Shrimp in it?

My Pelia was waiting for me when I got home so I've replaced the Riccia with it and also put some on a piece of stainless steel mesh to fill an empty space I had in the back corner although you can't see it through the mini Crypt jungle that's developing well, It's a lovely looking plant, hopefully I've used enough and it will fill out nice and bushy, I've got some left probably about half a golf ball size if anyone wants it?

The shrimp seem very happy in the tank although I'm sure I've lost one already as I can only see nine in there.

Here's an updated pic;
