i currently have the following set up and want to know if replacing biomech with seachem matrix would be better
or change Micromec with seachem matrix

When I ran a 405 I used ceramic, hexagonal pieces in the bottom basket, coarse foam in the middle and fine fooam in the top with a polishing pad on top of that.
 
I have never used anything other than the ceramic pieces and foam. It filters, it has plenty of spaces for beneficial bacteria and the top polishing pad keep the water clear.
 
Only the pad was ever replaced.
 
With the above and regular water changes you do not need to buy these short-life gimmicks that filter companies would have you believe are crucial to your fishes survival.
