Hey everyone

I am using a fluval 305 external filter, set up at the moment is biomax in the first 3 baskets and carbon in the bottom three.

I want to remove the 3x carbon, was going to put pre-filter in the bottom 2 and another basket of biomax in.

Do you think this will be ok, filter has been running for approx 1 month.

yep fill it with bio media, and use a polishing filter/pad in the bottom compartment :) i always get rid of the carbon :)

to be honest , i wouldnt use a polish pad, but if i was going to i would put it in the top basket. You will find that if you use a polish pad it will clog very easily and you will have to be changing it every fortnight, which can be a pain!! i dont use a polish pad in my 405 and my water is crystal clear on the tank i use it on (125litres)

If floss is the first thing the water passes through on entering the filter and passing the foam screen frame, IME it will clogg real fast. I'd pass it through a fine sponge first, then floss in the second. Biomax in all other compartments will be fine though :good: Just a heads-up to hopefuly reduce your maintanance time. If you don't want the fine sponge going biological, rinse it in tap water at each cleaning, but I'd personaly use tank water, to avoid killing filter bacteria, as extra bio capasity IMO cannot hurt :hyper:

Ive got floss in the bottom of mine and the next two have biomax... i thought the side panal sponges would catch all the larger particles?

And let the bio media clog up instead? The whole point of a polish pad it to clog up, that's how it takes debris out the water :P.
Some tanks need polishing pads before the ceramic media, yours obviously doesn't, but I have sand and an airpump kicking it up in my tank - without the filter floss before the biomax, the biomax gets clogged up way too fast reducing the surface area that the water can flow over, and the ceramic rings are much harder to clear out than the polishing pads/filter wool.

You really NEED to wash it in tank water. It will go biological weather you like it or not, and the sponge prefilters in the 305 are so big this will make a considerable differance and cause the filter to go though a mini-cycle if you wash it under tap water.
