From your work with the Fluval hoses you can probably now see why those hoses take some pretty significant knocks from a lot of the hobbyists here who say they are just downright weird. On the other hand I suppose that tube design was trying to go for more flexibility or something, I don't know, what do you think? I use an Eheim, so normal hoses.
You don't need the heater to start your fishless cycle. If you've got everything else you can just add ammonia to go for 4-5ppm or less and it will get started, slower than with heat but started nontheless. When you do get the heater you'll want your separate thermometer to show 29C/84F, at least that's my pick for the optimal bacteral growing soup temperature, lol.
