Well i have a 1 gallon tank that i put some of my fish in when they're sick and all. (i know it's not large..but ya<--they've always eben fine with it. And i'm NOT CRUEL for doing this, each time they went in there they came out PERFECTLY HEALTHY.)
recently i've wanted a betta since i have not had one for about..6 months due to moving and well he didn't make it...then i just wanted to settle in and well here i am!
anyways, i would like to keep the 1 gallon tank empty, but i do not have the 20-75$ to buy a 1-5gallon tank for the betta..
and well if you all know ikea, they have some huge flower vases...and i was wondering if i could buy one..
i've found one that's quite large..i'd say about 2-3 gallons large..
and i was wondering if it'd be alright..and yes i know they need a heater and filter..
but i take water every 3-5 days from my 10 gallon tank and replace 50-75% of the betta tank's water with that.
it's worked so far perfectly!

i know there are people saying vases are horrible...but it's will be quite large...and it'll be 2-3 gallons..
so i would like to know what your opinions are...even if it is just saying "too small."

as long as its just a vase not the peace lily vases it should be fine.......... I have kept bettas in Vases that large before and they did great..... However they had a silk plant and thats it.

If you find that theres little room for a silk plant I like to hang a plant off the top of the tank to give them the swimming room they need plus a place to rest .

as for your 10 gall
cory cats really do better in groups 4+ fish...... but Ihave kept them singly as well.

Also bettas dont need a heater and a filter they need the water to be kept at a constant temp I think its 75 to 85 degrees (correct me if I am wrong here)

Thank you!!
and yes i know about the cory thing..but when i found out about it they didn't have any left..
so i'm searching nfor some either bronze cories or something alike!!

It would help if the vase was more wide than it is tall, and the only thing Himmel said was about the temp, I know where I live to keep the temp 75+ I need to use a heater, filters not needed if you do water changes, but unless your house / room where the betta is kept is kept at at least 76 dgrees, you'd need a heater.

I have so many tanks, that they keep my apartment at 75 degrees +. So I don't worry much about a heater for the Bettas. They may be a little cooler than they would prefer, because I need a fan on to survive, but they are good. And I have to overload my plugs to keep all those things plugged in. :) So the point is, if you keep a fairly even temp where the tanks are, there should not be any problem.

(shh! Don't tell, but frankly I get tired of people yelling about heaters and filters. People need to know their fish's needs and adapt to the situation. Others should find out the specifics, before they start yelling about their pet peeves. Another little bit of irony.)

Sandi is right, wider/bigger circumference is better and wide at the mouth. Take care to cover or lower the water or something to avoid jumping. Have you considered a critter keeper? They are not decorative, but they are good to have around and are inexpensive--more or less.

there are 2.5 glass aquariums at petsmart for $10, and 1 gallon tanks with lights for about $10....

well right now my room is about...80 degrees...would that be alright??
it's really REALLY warm in my room all the time...sometimes it's insane..
but ya, then it should we okay.
and so would a vase kind of like:
\................../
.\................/
..\............../
...\............/
....\______/
would that be okay???
(ignore the dots...b=i couldn't find the picture but i found taht vase in ikea..
it's about 20 cms in heights...so ya...but it goes pretty wide at the top.

and i actually haven't heard of critter keepers...maybe i'll check them out!!!

wow..i just asked the exact same question on another site and got completly BASHED/FLAMMED by it..wwow.
now i muchmuch prefer this site!!!
because before i was trying to find which one was better but now i obviously know this one is for sure!!!

We aim to inform! Knowledge is power, they say. haha

What is the circumferemce of the vase--bottom and top? I actually would prefer to see wide and squat. More like a lily bowl. I have my eye on a bowl at the lps that is about a foot circumference at the base and 6+" tall. I may be off. It is probably more than a gallon. (It is costly--$25--but I think it will make a nice Quasi home for the gimpy one coming from Synirr.) Bettas need to be able to be near the surface, but they also need to poke around the bottom. They can get air at the top. That is one reason they are able to live without the extra air a filter supplies.

You know, two days ago, I purchased a 2.5g glass aquarium with a glass hood for $9.99. Not expensive at all. Might actually be cheaper than a vase. I actually plan a nano planted tank with a betta in it.

llj :)

that's american..and also the places here...the like..30 gal. tanks are about 150$ but then the 10 gallons are about 100$..
so i don't it's really messed up here where i live in canada.
and the vase is about 5$ canadian..
so i think i'll probably end up going with that!

and do the bettas like having construction paper backgrounds? or not? (you know how most f.w. tanks ahve those background things..on my 10 gal. i have solid blue background..and i was wondering if betta's like that aswell or not??
and will they get constantly annoyed if i have a cat that will sit infront of him for about an hour a day just watching him (not trying to eat it..LOL)

Background is fine. I have reservations about the cat getting near the fish container. I don't have much more to say about the vase thing.

18 cm I think is about 7 inches. You will need a cover. In order to lower the water enough to keep the betta from jumping out it will make the water level awfully low, if I am right about the dimensions. I think the volume might be less than you think if it is 10" sq at the top, 5" sq at the bottom and 7" tall. How thick is the glass? That is the external dimensions?

I actually thought I could do something with vases once, but gave up looking for the right thing.

This is now your decision to make. A critter keeper is $10 or less at petco. You can actually use a Sterilite tub or a plastic shoe box. There are lots of things that will work. I don't know what is available in BC.
