hi just a quick one im trying floss in my new external filter but the output doesnt seem that great for a 2000l/h filter does floss restrict flow alot.

my water is crystal clear though fantastic stuff

im not 100% sure i got it second hand until i can afford a f5x or wateva its called lol i think its by a company called all pond solutions or something its a 2000l/h with 9w uv bulb.

but is #105### for putting together and filling flooded front room after alot of fudgin around lol

Floss will slow the flow significantly, your best bet is to use a fine foam instead

I bought a big bag of it am my LFS for $2. it pretty much seems like fine spongy cotton that I just cut to fit my filter and it works great for me, not a huge difference in flow either. is that what you are using as well or is your's a different type?

Floss/wool is excellent for improving water clarity. If it has slowed your flow rate then ensure that you are not using too much. Normally a thin layer will be sufficient to catch all the fine particles. The idea is that you buy a bag full of the UNBRANDED filter wool for not very much money and replace every week or two. A layer usually about 4-5mm thick will be plenty.

you will loose flow. but if you change out the floss on a regular basis (once a week) its controllable. problem here would be the quality of the filter fittings.
using them, so much, they would need to be of good quality. the APS aint been around long enough for us to gauge that yet though. so be careful!

its not floss the reduces the flow, and means the "output doesn't seem that great for a 2000l filter". its the fact the filter flows less than 1000ph. and that's without floss, with only media!
2000lph is the pump power. measured, not even in the cannister. but with the pump alone.

now APS are not the only company to make claims, such as this. only two makers actually state a flow for the filter, set up as if it were being used.
that's Eheim and Aqua One. and even they flow 20-30% less than the box claims.

if you are interested in the actual flow. it not hard to find.
just place a small container under the outlet.
allow it to fill (it does not need to be that big).
whilst timing how long it takes, to fill.
now weigh the container,.
subtract the weight of the container, itself.
they multiply the time (the contained took to fill) up to 60 (seconds)
now do the same with the weight.
bingo, you got the LPH of YOUR actual filter.

this not only lets you know the flow of your filter. but it allows you to see how its flow is degraded over time.

I do understand this is not a DEFINITIVE, flow rate. the amounts and time are too short for that.
but, if you do it regularly, it will be very close to the TRUTH

this method will also allow you to gauge how much flow the floss removes. allowing you to work out if its worth it.

I have to say i dont use floss. though there is a thin pad (of it) a top my bio media (1/4 inch thick when dry)
yet i still bang my head on the tank, the water is that clear.

it may be worth looking at the media, you use, and the way it is arranged.
bits in the water usually mean there is not enough flow to ensure cleaning.
this could be because the filter needs cleaned. or, simply, because it does not cycle the water enough.

Tried a fine flease type material - Symec? Something like that from JBL.

Was great at removing the fines but I found it blocked and so reduced flow. Had to open the external filter more regularly to remove and replace the material - and that was not fun.

Now what I do is add a flocculant to the tank whenever I find the water is starting to get a little less clear than I would like. This binds the fine particles together and enables my normal filtration to grab the particles more easily.

hi thanks for the info just done the test a couple of times with my filter and floss as part of media and im getting around 1100 ltrs and hour flow into the tank 2 ltrs every 7 seconds i wunder how much differnce the floss actually makes as i do have an entire tray of it in my filter il test next time i clean filter but thanks anyway much appreciated

An entire tray of floss is excessive; you only need a thin layer.

is even cheaper if you use cushion filler!
just check it has no fire retardant, and its the same stuff.
