Hi, i have a Tetratec External Filter running in my 240l Tank alongside the internal Jewel Filter. About 3 weeks ago i came down and found that about 5 litrers of water had spilled from the Filter and flooded my kitchen (wooden floors ruined!!). So i took the filter out, cleaned it completely and put it back, no leaks thanks god. Until yesterday when it happened again, it seems the water is leaking slowly from where the lid of the Tetratec Filter is attached to the main body of the filter.? I have tried everything but for some reason it still leaks, each time from a different spot around the edge. I was tempted to seal it with glue but then i wouldnt be able to open it for cleaning. I cant afford another one and my tank is becoming very dirty with just the jewel filter..if anyone has any ideas what could be wrong please advise asap as i am almost tempted to just quit this hobby and sell my stuff as its heart breaking seeing my tank so dirty and my house so ruined, plus if it leaks again the missus will divorce me....

i must say that so far tetratec have an amazing reputation, but of course they will have the odd dodgy one, i myself have tetratec and it was recommended on this forum but a lot of people, problem is that they are not established in the market so all these faults are few and far between, have you made sure that you
*havent added too much media?
*checked the seals and taps?-ensured the taps are scerwed tight over the pipes
*check you have placed the top onto the bottom the right way ( sounds daft but i ahve done it the wrong way round too)

but if all else fails get onto tetratec and tell them whats happens, i havent heard any bad feedback about this company to date,so im sure they would help you all they can.good luck

oh and im sure the wife wont really divorce you,if the dog had walked water over the floor she would threaten to divorce him too.. its a woman thing ;)

Check and clean the rubber ring that goes between the canister body and top. It could be setup wrong or be worn out. You can try to add some pertrolium jelly to get a good seal. It's always a good idea to put canister filters in a plastic bin. So water leaks don't damage floors.

Hi, take the main seal off. Clean it well with a scouring pad and also clean out it's seating (the area that it sits in). After this, apply capacious amounts of petrolonium jelly (Vasaline or similar) and re-seat it. Make sure it sits correctly in the grove or it will leak. Also, wipe round the internal and leading leading edge where the seal passes over when the head is seated. This should cure the leak. If this does not work, phone Tetratec. Their e-mail is slow apparently, though it may be a temperary thing.

Spares for these are not yet available (according to Tetratec in an e-mail I got from them enquiring about parts I routienly keep in stock for all my filters) and the only spares they have in-office for the EX1200 model are impellers ATM. If that does not fix it, they will probibly re-call your filter for a direct replacement, or they may find a way to pinch the parts off a model that was intended to be sold...

My external filter always sits in a plastic bucket, just in case of leaks........I can't afford to lose the wife ;)

Thanks all, great advice as usual, especially about putting it in a large bucket, simple idea but i would never have dreamed of it.....
