this one today.....

So. I know what the store said. but after my Sydney (synodontis) misrepresentation, I want your info.

I want to know:
What type of gourami?
Male or female?
Flake of live food?
Gets along with livebearers and tetras?

and any other helpful tidbits you have!

I would say that is an Opaline Gourami. Hard to sex from the picture but at a guess i would say female. Will accept flake food but would also appreciate live/frozen, they should have both algae-based food and meat-based food for a healthy and balanced diet. Minimum tank size of 20 Gallons. Males have been known to be aggressive, especially towards fish with long fins, females should be ok with other fish, though they do appreciate their own territory where they can relax. These fish should not be kept with aggressive or even semi-aggressive fish or they will become stressed and shy.

You really should research fish before just buying them on an impulse (easier said than done, i know) and just hoping they will fit into your tank, will save you a lot of trouble down the line.

I had asked at one point what kind of fish I could add to my tank. and they said gourami. but they didnt say what kinds. So Im asking now

I wouldn't recommend getting any barbs/other gourami/fin-nippers. For future reference. Your stock sounds fine, just watch out if she shows aggressive behavior towards the other fish. And if you dont want any fry then she'll be happy to take care of that for you. If you've got any live plants, she'll trim those down for food. Mine like pretty much all the foods: flakes, pellets, algae wafers, frozen bloodworms, blackworms, peas, pretty much anything that they can put in their mouth. Mine eat like they'll never eat again, so if you may have to put in effort so that all of your fish get some food.

I dont plan on any more nippers. As for fry, I move the pregnant mamas to my 10 gallon to birth....

Good idea. You can move them back in after they've done their business. Generally mine don't bother the small fish of the tank, though they can be curious and watch them. I think gourami have a lot of personality, like as if they recognize my face and come to the front of the tank or observe me while I'm observing them or get jealous of other fish and try to get in my line of sight of them. Sometimes my mama acts like a shark and slowly sneaks up and then darts ahead with her mouth open for the kill. She's such a beautiful fish now after a few months, I really need to take more pictures. They say that these gourami's grow up to 6" in length, but I've never been able to find any adult pictures!
