More lol. Kids bedrooms will soon be fish-rooms/kids-rooms.

Rather unusual shapes + colours there Lesley, i like them quite a bit. Such ugly faces they are kind of cute

Its a good job I like you James, dont you start Bubbering my new guys

Thanks for the photos Star, they are looking good!! :) :)

Not to make you think your not special, but they always seemed to have there ovipositors out ..(if that's the right word!!) I had yet to distinguish the subtle differences between the male and female tho..

Very pleased they are in such great tank and they have friends in there.. just hope it all stays friendly when they spawn..

and btw the pics don't quite do them justice they are even better looking in person ;)

and please feel free to name them, they're old names didn't quite fit as one should be female!, the smaller was Jefro and the larger Noddy..

I will try and get some better pics for you. I just quickly snapped a few so you could see them settled. The colour has really come up in them both this morning and they are eating like little piggies. If I do get them to spawn in this tank I will remove the eggs and raise them by hand, but hopefully in a month or so they will be in a tank to themselves.

I havnt thought of names yet, I already have a Jethro so that one is out

Photos are great thanks, already showed my Mum, she's pleased they're settled in
:good:

Would you be tempted to let them have a go at raising the fry second or third time around? They are supposed to produce that mucus thing that discus do to feed the young.. or do all cichlids do that.?

If my pair spawn again I may well take notes from you and remove the eggs on your instruction :)

Looking at my pair again I'm sure the fin at the back underneath is a good way to tell the fe-male male apart.. I think the male has this fin going all the way from the back to half way across hs body and the female only to a third.. I'm guessing this is due to the female needing more space to lay the eggs on a flat surface..? any thoughts on any other differences?

I'm still wondering if we have pairs now but I'm pretty sure :/

I will only take the eggs away if they spawn in this tank, there are too many other fish plus a huge plec that would no doubt eat the eggs, but it may be a case of wait and see just how aggressive they are and where they spawn. If they spawn at one end of the tank there "should" be enough space for them to raise fry. Its going to be a case of see what happens and decide from there. Hopefully they will be in their own tank soon, but the way they seem to be enjoying the company of the other fish it may be a shame to move them. I will get some more pics up for your mum, they do seem very happy and contented so far. Just watching how they act with each other, they do act like a pair, they are always together. If you do get eggs and want to remove them give me a shout and I can tell you how I raised the severum fry. :good:

13 days since the arrival of the fliers and they look like they are going to start spawning, female is in full spawning colours and her breeding tube is well down, they have been cleaning the filter all day. Captured a pic of the male doing his bit, sorry for quality I had to use the zoom on my camera as I didnt want to disturb them then after 3 pics the batteries died :shout: . For some reason the male seems to be just practising at the moment, fingers crossed there will be eggs in the morning, sad part is with them being on the filter I cannot remove them

The female is actually laying eggs now, but the male is eating them as fast as she is popping them out, boy is she giving him hell

Big disappointment, no eggs this morning  the male must have eaten the lot, not surprised he isnt eating this morning, greedy devil :grr: The good side is they are together this morning, the squabble didnt last so hopefully they will try again in a couple of weeks or so, now I know what signs to look for I can overfeed them slightly 2 days before so the male hopefully  wont eat the eggs next time.
