Non species bonding

Some of my anomalochromis thomasi hang out with the shoal of yellow tail Congo tetras. Unusual to me on two accounts. Interspecies tolerance. Also I thought my tetras would occupy the mid and upper third of the water column but instead they solely live on the bottom with thomasi and pulchers.
