Fishless Cycling With Peat Pellets In External Filter?

I know it seems like a silly question but I'm new to external filters so would like to know...

When doing a fishless cycle can I have peat pellets in the external filter? The reason I ask is because I know they affect ph and water hardness and thought it may interfer with the process. Are carbon filter pads also alright?

Any type of filter media is ok to use while fishless cycling. The only type of filter you can't use is a UV Sterilizer which will kill the bacteria forming in the water before it has a chance to colonize.
