Just wondering if anyone has picked up an injury of any kind directly caused by their hobby!

I'm particularly interested in whether anyone has been bitten by the apple of their eye, some treasured fish!

(this was sorta inspired by the shark special on tv here in the uk and my thinking how COOL it would be to be able to construct a huge tank somewhere for the closest practical relatives of Rays and Dogfish! :)- Course in TOTAL fantasy land how amazing it would be to keep a small shark and be able to watch it cruising around like that in your own back yard...! )

I was chatting when hand feeding my morays, got slightly distracted and my white cheek got bored of waiting and decided my finger looked a bit like a mussel. Ouch, still my fav. moray though.

A week or so ago I was cleaning out the betta tanks and being the accident-prone goose that I am, I took the heater out, and plonked it (still running) into an empty yoghurt container. After fifteen or so minutes, I went to pick it up and saw it had melted a hole through the plastic container. So I (stupidly) grabbed it in the palm of my hand, got burnt, swore and got a massive, welty burn.

Another time I was, again, cleaning betta tanks and the thermometer wouldn't come off. I needed to get the algae off from behind it so I pulled on the suction cup. Wouldn't budge. Pulled harder... same story. So I grabbed the long tubey bit and pulled. It came off alright, but it shattered in my hand and sliced myt hand a fair bit.

Told you I was accident prone. :p

never been bitten by anything but did cut my finger on glass on top of tank once, should have had stitches but don't like needle :*) lol left me a nice scar & slight loss of feeling in that finger

YEAH!!!

Last week one of my tubes died. At that stage I wasn't sure if it was the tube or the light unit that had died. And I couldn't wait for it to cool down. so I got a HUGE blister on my finger for being impatient. Then the next day I cut the same finger at work so the blister had a cut attached to it....LOL....

not me. Haven't keep any really agreesive fish.

A few days ago, I dropped the glass hood from my 10g when I was doing routine tank duties. Got a small cut on my hand and had to clean a big mess. :grr:

But what is worse is that I'm really allergic to bloodworms. I can't even touch the live ones, they make my eyes swell shut and I break out in hives. The freeze-dried ones also cause problems, though less severe. Unfortunately, bettas love blood worms, so I have to use tweezers to feed them their treat. What I do for my children, it can only be

One man in the US died when the glass tak he was performing maintenanceon collapsed under the pressure of his body. (He was leaning on it, from a ladder) And he bled to death.

Just one incident im aware of. Myself, i have been electrecuted twice. One major. :S

electrcuted from light - 5 times
glass in my arms, legs and hands because of thin glass lids - 9 times
blister on my hand from heater - 4 times
bites from breeding pairs of fish - too many (not to serious though...just felt like adding :p )
Seeing the look on my fishes face like "What, i didn't do nothing" - Pricless :D

I dropped a tank on my foot at work, and also punched (accidently) an external acrylic protein skimmer whilst trying to remove a pipe. That cut 3 of my fingers and they bled alot considering how little pain i was in.... Those are both "work related" but also "fish related"..

Never done any damage to myself at home with fish stuff, just got quite wet from time to time.

well where do i start

Ive had a needle fish bite my finger as i was removing some dead plant matter from the waters surface, the little sod wouldnt let go so i was franticly waving my hand about with a fish finger puppet attached.

My arowana once jumped at my hand as i was feeding the fish and hit my wrist with so much force i thought it had broken it, it swelled up to twice the size and hurt for weeks after that.

A spotted raphael (talking catfish) that i was trying to remove from a piece of bogwood clamped down on my fingers with its serated pectoral fins and nearly removed the tips of my thumb and forfinger.

And to top it all off i've been shocked twice by my electric catfish, the last time the shock was so strong it knocked me onto my backside and made me bite my tounge so hard it bled.

^Holy smeg! All I've done is get a very mild electric shock for not turning everything off during a larger water change. And then sticking my hand in. :*)
Most of my fish are peaceful and with little or no teeth. Somehow I suspect those synos will get me one day. :shifty:
Hugs,
P.

BLIMEY you lot?!! This is plain scary!

Ever considered taking up bird watching instead? Much safer!

i always worry a little when delving into the tank, and we don't even have any aggressive fish!! i'd probably do more damage yanking my hand out of the tank than any of the fish would do if they actually went for me lol
its gonna be scary when those bala sharks are in their new gynormous home! eek!

Tripped over the bucket being used for carrying out water changes.Water everywhere and me on the floor.Got up effing and blinding and stood on the siphon, smashing it
Wouldnt try bird watching-would probably strangle myself with the binoculars :)
