Let's Be Friends
I remember when I was first getting into the hobby. My original stocking was atrocious, which is how I ended up upgrading my tank. (2 blue gouramis that killed each other, 2 male guppies, 4 female guppies, 3 ghost catfish, 3 bleeding heart tetras, 1 algae eater, all in a single 20 gallon hexagon tank)
Anyways, I remember the first fish I wanted when I went to the LFS were pengasius catfish and bala sharks. Active, pretty, you know. Nobody was telling me not to do it, I asked how big the fish get, and if it would fit in my tank, and the employee told me my first aquarium myth, that my tank size doesn't matter, as fish only grow to the size of the tank.
This really turned me away from both of those fish species, I loved the two species a lot, but I didn't like the thought that I'd be keeping a fish from reaching its full potential just because I wanted to shove them in a tiny tank.
And thank goodness for that. From then on, I spent all my time exploring different websites, forums, and the like, reading everything I could on the aquarium trade and commonly found fish in domestication. Things have changed so much since then. I'm proud to be one of the people who doesn't stock their tank according to old fish keeping myths like those.
Does anyone else have any stories of fish that they really wanted to get, but are ultimately glad they didn't?

, but i know a 55g isn't adequate for them. I'll just have to wait until i get that monster tank i've always dreamed of.... 
I never found a definitive answer to their minimum tank size, though.
