I bought some Harlequin Rasboras from my LFS and have been doing really well except I noticed one only had one eye. He probably got this from bullying in the LFS tank and I was annoyed with myself that I had not noticed this at the time. I can see no infection and hes eating but obviously keeps himself to himself a lot of the time. I feel sorry for the little fella and because of the way I am could not possibly take him back but will he be ok? I know its a common problem but just wondering other peoples experiences.

if it isnt healed yet, i would dose a little melafix as a mild bacterial wall, to prevent infection. otherwise he'll be fine, people have had blind fish do great in their tank.

He should be fine. Keep him in good water conditions and nothing to worry about.
Sometimes when a fish first loses it eye it can swim on its side.

Thanks for the replies. Ill keep a close look on him. His swimming is fine just not as active as the others. He gets left behind depending on which way hes looking!

Should the socket completely heal over or will there be a hole still?

he should be fine because the fish uses its swim bladder for balance and stability.

I've never seen a fish swim on it's side cos it's lost an eye!

Still eye's to fish are not as important as they are to us.
If well cared for it will be fine even if it was totally blind. They use the lateral line to know what's going on primarily

Sight is perhaps on a level as a hand for us, yes if u lose it it's bad but you can lurn to carry on.

If it's looking sore (fresh) then melifix or myxazin will help stop any other infection, along with extra water changes.

Its certainly not sore, I would suggest hes been like that in the LFS for a while which I suppose is a good sign

Read it years ago that fish will sometimes swim on there sides when they lost an eye.

I have a very mature, actually getting quite old, angel that swims with one side always up compared to the other. It is what made me look hard and figure out that it is blind in one eye. It seems the fish feels more secure when the eye is pointing to what it wants to see. It is not laying on its side but is definitely tilted to one side to make best use of that remaining eye.

I have a group of Tiger Barbs in my 29 Gallon and one of them came home with only one eye. He ended up doing just fine!! And he does swim a little 'off' compared to the others, so that does happen.
