fish welfare?

Thanks, guys. I'm drafting a proposed amendment for our own animal welfare act and this clarifies things a lot. I've been looking at other countries' laws and patterning it mostly after European laws (Swiss, German, UK, etc) as I noticed they are more protective/accord more rights. Our present AWA, though poorly enforced if at all, covers fishes, I believe, so I guess that's something...

It's not illegal to feed live mice to snakes in the UK. As long as there is no cruelty involved. This means the mouse must be well cared for before feeding and that the feeding must be monitored and interrupted if there is a problem.

I believe even the RSPCA agree with this but I'm not 100% and can't think off-hand where I would find a link*.

Responsible snake keepers (in the UK at least) only use live feeding as a last resort. Once a snake has eaten live a couple of times then you can usually get them to eat dead.

*If you are really interested Kittycat let me know and I can have a search at lunchtime.
