I recommend keeping platys with guppies as long as you have at least a 20 gal tank. Guppies do well in schools so I recommend at least getting 5 together and keep the male to female ratio of about 1:2. Same with the platys. However this all depends on the size of your tank and your willingness to deal with fry as both fish breed like crazy. But that is just from my minimal research as I have never had guppies before.

Many community fish can be kept with guppies. What is the GH of your water?

Water hardness. If your water provider has a website it should tell you the hardness in numbers.
Whereabout s in the world are you?

The General Hardness. It represents the calcium and magnesium levels in the water. It is important because fish like guppies need hard water whereas others like most tetras and corydoras need softer water. If you look on your water providers website you may find it. Or post a link here so we can look. We need a number and the unit.

Community fish are any species that are low on aggression and are not territorial nor very timid. They have common requirements regarding temperature, water flow and feeding. This means they can be kept together with other community fish without many issues.

What are the tank dimensions (length x width x height)?

What is the GH (general hardness), KH (carbonate hardness) and pH of your water supply?
This information can usually be obtained from your water supply company's website or by telephoning them. If they can't help you, take a glass full of tap water to the local pet shop and get them to test it for you. Write the results down (in numbers) when they do the tests. And ask them what the results are in (eg: ppm, dGH, or something else).

Depending on what the GH of your water is, will determine what fish you should keep.
Tetras, barbs, gouramis, rasbora, Corydoras and small species of suckermouth catfish all occur in soft water (GH below 150ppm).

Livebearers (guppies, platies, swordtails, mollies), rainbowfish and goldfish occur in medium hard water with a GH around 200-250ppm.

If you have very hard water (GH above 300ppm) then look at African Rift Lake cichlids or use distilled or reverse osmosis water to reduce the GH and keep fishes from softer water.

If the company that provides your tap water has a website it may tell you your water hardness on there.
