AgreedYeah dwarf gouramis, tiger barbs, chinese algae eaters/sucking loaches, anything that eats live fish.
There the bestLarge predatory fish -- Arrowanas, Oscars, Red Tailed Catfish, piranhas. I think they need too big tanks and that they aren't worth the money. I don't really mind if a fish doesn't have much personality. That's just not what I got for. I want visually appealing fish that don't grow enormous.
I agree on most fish but discus are awsome fish, hardly finicky (although from their reputation it seems so).Parrot fish, lovely fish.Ask from anyone who has owned them. Many don't have problems now (none that I have seen) and are fine to breed and sell for the aquarium. The internet kind of gives them a really bad name though.I havn't even seen any dyed ones in east anglia for 3 years.Pangius, Red Tailed, and Tiger Shovelnosed catfish. Too big for 999 or 1000 fish keepers to handle. Ditto Red Bellied Pacu, and godd*mn Pestco carries them all the time for like $2 each. (And, I am told, they are given to charging the tank wall and breaking it. Silly fish.)
Balloon Mollies and Parrot Cichlids. Quasi-Pisco. Not a big fan of deformed fish.
Discus. Too finicky, too pricey.
Heck, I have a tank of neons and 4 tanks of guppies at the moment. Neons are thriving. I got the guppies for my 6 year old, and kept the spawn around for feeding my turtle and keeping my QT tank cycled.
Agreed.I have got bored of guppies and danios aswell though.I think the "Chinese Algae eater" has to be the most useless aquarium fish all around. Doesn't eat algae past its youth and attacks all other fish. Not a single tank I could think of where it has a proper place.
Tetras are pretty boring, especially glowlight tetras. Really hardy, but don't seem to do much of anything. I don't think I'm going to buy them again unless it's a nano species like the ember tetra...oh, or a cave tetra tank. Those guys are cool, albeit semi-aggressive.
Anyway, the most boring things in my current tank are the Kuhli and the Dwarf Crays. Mainly because I never, ever get to see them, though they're apparently going strong. It's unfortunate as both are pretty awesome animals.
I disagree that Guppies or Danios are boring fish. Neither one is boring, they're just so hopelessly pedestrian that after awhile in the hobby it irks us we still have the darned things in our tanks.![]()
Agreed, but you can see what I said about parrot fish above.Pangasius, tsn's and rtc's are my main problem sales.
but parrot cichlids, what the heck is the appeal there? the most FUGLY fish ever, colour wise and overall shape etc, the poor buggers cant even close thier mouths it seems to me! Shouldn't be allowed to breed them imo, not a fan of man made ancistrus either (ie long fin, piebald).
oh and most coldwater fish are ugly as well imo
Sound slike you got the wrong catfish thenUmm for me it would have to be catfish. I bought three once and never saw any off them and they ate all of the food before my other fish could get it. They even ate fish like 2/3 there size!
55 gallon isn't exactly large, msot people who have been keeping fish for a year or two advance to bigger tanks.Normal plecos, IE common, sailfin and the albino form all clean algae of glass like a hoover will suck up dust.I don't care for plecos. They are dubbed "algae eaters" but they just sit and poop. Plus I never got a 55 gallon tank or more to hold one. I don't even bother with them.
Guppies and neon tetra's never had any luck with either of them.
They are not very hardy species and the transfer procedure is crucial. From reading around at bit most success has been had by adding fish to a bucket then very slowly adding tank water over a 3 - 4 hour period. A Slow dripping siphon whould be best for this, you may also need to consider an airstone in the bucket as well. This seems to be the only way that most people have got them into their tank without too many deaths. We can't seem to keep Rummy Nose Tetras alive. Really like them though.
