Fish That Are Not Worth Buying.

I'm not buying anymore tetra they just sit around alday looking bored.
My harlequins and guppys make up for the mardy arse tetras.

i dont like live bearers....they are to cannibalistic...i love african cichlids! got loads of them! angels are nice to very pretty my angels are funny they beg ! and they are always hams when it comes to photo time lol!

I don't care for plecos. They are dubbed "algae eaters" but they just sit and poop. Plus I never got a 55 gallon tank or more to hold one. I don't even bother with them.

any goldfish unless you have a pond. otherwise i'd just say most plecos. most of the people seem to be listing fish they just dont like or couldn't/didnt know how to take care of. if you do your homework FIRST you will never buy a fish that is not worth buying.

chinese algea eater...arrghhh when they get over a year old they start to cling to other fish in the tank to suck the protective coat of slime off them yuck!!

Despite my best efforts I've never had the slightest bit of luck with neons or cardinals, gourami, angels, upside down or those lion catfish things, but the ones that cost me the most and I did so badly with were GKF and whale nose ones. Great fish but needs so much special care and LFS never tell you that when you buy them!

Tiger Barbs. Absolute buggers. Seem to nip everything depite chosing appropriate tank mates, planting heavily etc. My tank is much happier now they are back at the LFS.

:good:

Yeah dwarf gouramis, tiger barbs, chinese algae eaters/sucking loaches, anything that eats live fish.
Agreed

Large predatory fish -- Arrowanas, Oscars, Red Tailed Catfish, piranhas. I think they need too big tanks and that they aren't worth the money. I don't really mind if a fish doesn't have much personality. That's just not what I got for. I want visually appealing fish that don't grow enormous.
There the best  , and quite a few people can look after oscars. However so many are at shops, even more then common fish such as gouramis (it seems). That too few people have large enough fish tanks.

Pangius, Red Tailed, and Tiger Shovelnosed catfish. Too big for 999 or 1000 fish keepers to handle. Ditto Red Bellied Pacu, and godd*mn Pestco carries them all the time for like $2 each. (And, I am told, they are given to charging the tank wall and breaking it. Silly fish.)

Balloon Mollies and Parrot Cichlids. Quasi-Pisco. Not a big fan of deformed fish.

Discus. Too finicky, too pricey.

Heck, I have a tank of neons and 4 tanks of guppies at the moment. Neons are thriving. I got the guppies for my 6 year old, and kept the spawn around for feeding my turtle and keeping my QT tank cycled.
I agree on most fish but discus are awsome fish, hardly finicky (although from their reputation it seems so).Parrot fish, lovely fish.Ask from anyone who has owned them. Many don't have problems now (none that I have seen) and are fine to breed and sell for the aquarium. The internet kind of gives them a really bad name though.I havn't even seen any dyed ones in east anglia for 3 years.

I think the "Chinese Algae eater" has to be the most useless aquarium fish all around. Doesn't eat algae past its youth and attacks all other fish. Not a single tank I could think of where it has a proper place.

Tetras are pretty boring, especially glowlight tetras. Really hardy, but don't seem to do much of anything. I don't think I'm going to buy them again unless it's a nano species like the ember tetra...oh, or a cave tetra tank. Those guys are cool, albeit semi-aggressive.

Anyway, the most boring things in my current tank are the Kuhli and the Dwarf Crays. Mainly because I never, ever get to see them, though they're apparently going strong. It's unfortunate as both are pretty awesome animals.

I disagree that Guppies or Danios are boring fish. Neither one is boring, they're just so hopelessly pedestrian that after awhile in the hobby it irks us we still have the darned things in our tanks.
Agreed.I have got bored of guppies and danios aswell though.

Pangasius, tsn's and rtc's are my main problem sales.

but parrot cichlids, what the heck is the appeal there? the most FUGLY fish ever, colour wise and overall shape etc, the poor buggers cant even close thier mouths it seems to me! Shouldn't be allowed to breed them imo, not a fan of man made ancistrus either (ie long fin, piebald).

oh and most coldwater fish are ugly as well imo
Agreed, but you can see what I said about parrot fish above.

Umm for me it would have to be catfish. I bought three once and never saw any off them and they ate all of the food before my other fish could get it. They even ate fish like 2/3 there size!
Sound slike you got the wrong catfish then :look: .Most catfish are awsome, never been bored of them.

I don't care for plecos. They are dubbed "algae eaters" but they just sit and poop. Plus I never got a 55 gallon tank or more to hold one. I don't even bother with them.
55 gallon isn't exactly large, msot people who have been keeping fish for a year or two advance to bigger tanks.Normal plecos, IE common, sailfin and the albino form all clean algae of glass like a hoover will suck up dust. :D
Couldn't find much to post on so I thought I might aswell say what I think!

I like livebearers - they're fun, they are always happy to see you, and they are so easy to feed. (And thankfully, I've had good luck with the ones I've had.) And I absolutely love my honey gourami's - gorgeous coloured and oh so cute.

Ones I don't think I'd buy (either again [and part of this is because I now have a fish that eats small fish], or for the first time)...

Cherry Barbs again... All they do is float around! I tried to add some more, but my spotted climbing perch has just found out he's big enough to eat small fish, so they didn't last long.

Danios are spunky - or maybe spastic a better word for them - and always moving, but not brightly coloured (and I ended up with soooo many fat females...).

Killifish - can't keep any of them alive for very long (and at $12/fish that gets very costly!).

Panda Cories - I have two that are doing fine, the rest have all died on me.

Any fish that hides all the time... What's the point??

And I'm not big on fish that get really big and are aggressive. Ttotally the opposite of my boyfriend... can you tell we're going to have seperate tanks?

I'd also add Labeo Chrysophakedion (i think the taxonomical clasification has changed?) to the list of pointless fish, unless of course kept alone.
But then why buy a huge tank and fill it with one algae eater?
Its not a matter of if, its a matter of when its going to start attacking your other fish......

Neon tetras (IMO) are just mind-numbingly common and completely boring.

Dwarf gourami just aren't worth the risk unless you can guarantee a good source.

Chocolate Gourami are often viewed as not worth buying, due to the fact they seem to die quite readily, but that appears to be through being added to unsuitable tanks. I'd certainly give them a go....

:dunno:

Guppies and neon tetra's never had any luck with either of them.

..... :grr:

I don't like crabs. Can't even remember how many I've had escape the tank; only to be found months latter dried up in the corner of my closet or elsewhere in the house.

We can't seem to keep Rummy Nose Tetras alive. Really like them though.
They are not very hardy species and the transfer procedure is crucial. From reading around at bit most success has been had by adding fish to a bucket then very slowly adding tank water over a 3 - 4 hour period. A Slow dripping siphon whould be best for this, you may also need to consider an airstone in the bucket as well. This seems to be the only way that most people have got them into their tank without too many deaths.

:good:

I'm not too unhappy with my serpae tetras but I did have to move the guppies! I think Flying Fox should be added to the list. My lfs sold them to me as an algae eating fish but didn't tell me that they get 9 inches and are semi aggressive. They are hardy little things too wouldn't you know it! I have 3 in the tank and everyone gets along great as long as no shows weakness...the serpaes and flying fox go after the weak one then and I have to pull out hte breeder trap.
