It depends, if you are going for a heavily planted tank, then plant substrate is better. If you are using few plants, sand is the best. For moderately planted tanks, gravel is better.

I've got to agree with this. Have bought 2 big fish tanks off ebay and both have been fantastic. I couldn't have afforded either of my tanks if i had bought them new. Bought a juwel 450 + eheim pro2 2026 + 2126 + Eheim wet and dry + Uv steriliser + Co2 unit + Large pond style water pump for £250 and I'm pretty sure i was the only person bidding past £200 althiugh i do like eheim filters so was happy to pay the extra. Also bought a 8ftx18"x20" with a metal stand for £50 a few years ago. I'm in Abergavenny btw got mates who live/work up in merythr. CO2 and UV sterilser are just sat in a pile in the cupboard but they where free so can't really complain.
