i'm RUBBISH at maths.

how do you work out US gallons to litres and litres to US gallons, with just the aid of a calculator?

explain it to me simply, i'm numerically dyslexic... :shout:

Um, can I ask why the hate for online converters when its so simple? IMO much simpler than any calculator

www.onlineconversion.com/volume

Put in what you have, select say litres on the left, and change it into what you want, say US liquid gallons in the column on the right (or vice versa) press convert....voila...its easy...

Yup, Google is a good calculator that understands words, but there's about 3.8l in a US gallon, and a litre is 0.3 US gallons. So if you've got a 60l tank, divide it by 3.8 to get US gallons, and if you've got a 10g tank, divide it by 0.3 to get litres. Roughly speaking.

ok here it is.....

lets say your tank is about 30 gallons..... which could be 4ft, 1ft, 1ft.... ok?

so now we put those into inches.... so, 48", 12", 12"..... with me?

now the formula for volume is Length X width X hight..... so go ahead...

48 X 12 X 12= 6912..... this number is now in "Cubic Inches"

so now all we need to do is to convert "Cubic Inches" to "Gallons"

The conversion ratio to US Gallons is .004329 gallons in a cubic inch...

Thus, 6912 X .004329 = 29.922 US gallons !

Close enough by my standards...............

I hope that Helps

From liters to gallons, I just divide by 4. I know it's 3.8 (3.785 to be more exact) but 4 gets me close enough. Even on a 300l tank for instance, the actual amount is 79.25 gallon. By dividing by 4, I get 75. Close enough for calculations on stocking levels.

I also use onlineconversions.com. It's bookmarked for quick reference. You can do any conversions you want.

yes online is great, but not when you're standing in the middle of a shop haha, even though i have a sidekick, the web isn't that fast.

thanks guys for baffling me with numbers, i will study them and memorise them hehe.

i use goconvert.com when i'm online.

As I said, the easiest way to convert liters to gallons is divide by 4. It's off a little but not enough to matter unless the tank is well over 100 gallons. Going the other way, simply multiply by 4.

100l = 25 gallons (actually 26.4)
29 gallons = 116l (actually 110)

Approximate but close

If you're talking length, most businesses use the same type tile, 12" x 12". Simply set it on the floor and to see how long/wide it is. Won't work for large tanks though but you can still look at the stand on the tile and get an idea.
