Mine is a 56. gallon i believe (220 litres). Do goldfish need arteficial light?

no fish need light, in fact many will be mroe comfortable without it.

I never knew that! Why is their requirements on how long to have the light on for? Is this purely for planted aquariums?(live plants)

live plants need (very roughly and depending on a million and one factors) 8 hrs lighting a day.

if you mean the fish tank comes with instructions for how long to keep the lights on, it's just a rough idea to get basic plants to grow and not induce too much algae at a guess.

when you acclimitise new fish or if they are poorly you should try and keep teh tank lights off, fish are calmer in the dark

I always turn the lights off and cover my aquarium with a heavy towel or blanket when introducing new fish so they can acclimate.

for how many fish? i must admit i thought 10g per fish was enough.

I like to give goldfish atleast 20G for the first fish+ 20G for every extra one, goldfish are heavy waste producers
