I went into a pet store that i go into whenever i am in the shopping centre. I have gotten a few fish from there which are doing well. But after what i seen today i will NEVER buy bettas from there or any other fish from there again :(

Every fish tank had at least one dead fish in it and 3/4s of the bettas had a fungus growing on them or were nearlly dead :( How can they display these fish? Im baffled as to how one can let fish get this sick or even display tanks like this. ive always been acarefull one where i get my fish from...but i will never get any more from there. To hear her talk about fish keeping and giving advise...i nearlly wanted to point out to the people about to buy from her all the things that were wrong. I also wanted to save all the bettas :(

I felt sorry for the fish :(

It makes me wonder if anyone else has seen anything nasty aswell? Did you speak up about it?

dunno if ur in the uk, but they need a lisence to sell fish, i think that comes from the local council.. report them and see if they get there backsides in gear..
im not 100% sure on this but someone else will be :)

seems to be something about treating fish badly its kinda almost acceptable :( but to us its not :)

well where i live, in wales, i have 2 LFS, 1 in pets at home @ llanelli and the other is maidenhead aqutics @ swansea.
i much prefer to buy from maid as there stock are fairly good. if u buy from pets at home, i dunno what it is but they all seem to die. i have bought a few fish in the past from pets at home and only 1 fish servived, my elephant nose fish and that only lasted about 6months. from now on, im only goin to buy from maidenhead aquatics @ swansea!

How can they display these fish?

'Cos there's nowhere else to put them? If a shop gets a dodgy delivery, especially if they run a centralised filter system, there's not a whole lot they can actually do about it. They can hardly shut the whole shop until its sorted.

like the above poster said, what else can they do, if those are the only tanks they have?

you should have spoken up, i have. i did it recently. one of my local shops (dobbies garden centre, lol) had 2 tanks with signs stating the fish were not for sale and they were being medicated. i noticed an angel fish in another tank with white spot and asked if the 2 tanks were the only ones being medicated.
the girl said yes, and they has separate filtration etc from the other tanks. i therefore pointed the angel fish out to her.

i was in again yesterday and the same tank was all clear. whether they were the same angel fish, i have no idea!!

you should have asked if the fish were being treated. if not, then yes, kick up a stink.

my only other local shop is a pets at home. i've not had problems with either shop, so i'm not going to say, yes buy from them, or no don't, as each store has their own fish supplier.

the welsh pets at home may have a bad supplier, where as mine, up here in scotland, may have a better supplier. you can't bad mouth the whole company for one store's problems.

i have bought fish from both, one as recently as yesterday, and not have problems. i still have fish i bought 2 years ago, from both shops.

the only other shop we've purchased fish from, is about 20 miles away. we bought quite a few fish from that shop, and 6 died in the first couple of days from some disease. so we've not bought from there again.

i think, sometimes it can be hit and miss, depending on what stock they get from their suppliers. people blame the shop that's selling them, when more often than not, it's the supplier that's at fault.
if these are the only places you can get your fish, what can you do?!
