I don't have one, but I'm sure you can open the filter, otherwise it would be uncleanable

Guys, I think he's talking about "fish r fun" aquariums. That was the title of the thread. I personally have never heard of them, but did a google search and found the website. I can't be of any help since I've never had one, though.

ihave the 5gal hex tank and the filter is not worth taking out of the box.
It has a weak powerhead (12v) that uplls the water up through a plastic pipe and it trickles over a sponge media. I found that the sponge filled with water and most of it ran over the top of the sponge (same with the carbonfilter) I amusing a pluval 1 plus in mine and the water is crystal clear. I think the filter is different on the larger tanks but on the 5gal hax i wudnt rely on it

Yes. No, Yes.
The beauty of the filter box is that you can put whatever filter media you want to in it.
(treat the box like a cannister.)
I have got peat amoungst other media in one of mine.
I have the gps(frf/AA)-661 and the gps(frf/AA) 2100R
I used to work in a lfs that sold the full range so I know these tanks well.

Yes, you can get into the filter and add your own material if you wanted too... at least you can on mine!
