The thing that most shocks me is that the betta managed to survive in a vase with no cleaning of it for 5yrs- i wouldn't have thought that was posible and the poor fish must have led a very miserable existance.

You couldn't imagine the number of people who have told me about their bettas who lived for years in filthy water with stinking plants stuck in their vases. I spent 30 minutes yesterday "instructing" one of my co-workers who couldn't understand why their betta died. They bought it at the store that way.

He understands now, and I know that he would never have hurt the fish intentionally if he had known. He and his wife have rescued a litter of feral kittens who's mother was shot and killed. He gives me regular updates on them. He's a really softhearted guy. He just didn't know.

That is what I thought to. The girl said she feed it every 2-3 weeks, because her aunt never did.

had one for 5 years that never died.

Hmm... I somehow find that hard to believe. Considering the average lifespan for one in good condition is only about 2 years or so, and they are already about 6 months old (don't debate me, it might not be exactly right but to you) when you buy them.

usually they do only live that long, but some do live longer, very rare though.

I hate to say it, but your friend was probably lying or exagerating or just trying to get you worked up when she told you that about the betta; it just doesn't add up. He would have been lucky to live a year in conditions like that, genetically able to live longer or not.

she really didnt know what the topic I was doing was about. I just mentioned about how I wanted to bring in a goldfish in a bowl for the prodject.

Though she also did say her aunt lost a goldfish down the drain. Some of her other stories do seem far fetched though. But they usually are true. ( others always are at the place that the storie is about with her, etc.)
