The thing that most shocks me is that the betta managed to survive in a vase with no cleaning of it for 5yrs- i wouldn't have thought that was posible and the poor fish must have led a very miserable existance.
				
			 
  and I know that he would never have hurt the fish intentionally if he had known.  He and his wife have rescued a litter of feral kittens who's mother was shot and killed.  He gives me regular updates on them.  He's a really softhearted guy.  He just didn't know.

Hmm... I somehow find that hard to believe. Considering the average lifespan for one in good condition is only about 2 years or so, and they are already about 6 months old (don't debate me, it might not be exactly right butwrs said:had one for 5 years that never died.
