Hi all,

Below is the link to my current fish-less cycle log.

I understand my API test kit isn't the most reliable, but the general indication is that I'm progressing fairly well. I've posted this topic to ask about my pH/HR pH reading. As you will see, I tested earlier on today for HR pH and discovered it had risen from 7.8 to 8.4. I have nothing in my tank other thank a sand substrate. What could be the cause of this?

Cheers,

Luke.

Ah, no worries. I think I've sussed it. I'd recently added a dose of Ammonia to the tank, of which is alkaline, resulting in a temporarily high pH/HR pH reading. That aside, any remarks regarding the progress of my cycle?

Cheers,

Luke.

Your fishless cycle looks to be off to a good start Luke: ammonia making its first drop to zero and nitrite headed up to the classic "nitrite spike." You are correct that ammonia is moderately basic. WD
