Fish For A New Planted Tank

so i have just finished cycling my tank its a new 65 gallon and its my first planted tank i have already gotten some swords in there and i got 2 yoyo loaches and i forget the name of two other bottom feeders the lfs told me the are a must for planted tanks as will eat alga off the plants and yoyos would take care of snails so other than that what should i do for fish in my other tank i got some guarmis and danios so im thining this would be a bigger community tank but with some better looking fish

so thats my tank the log on the right is from my other tank will be taken out i was using it to try and transfer som bb to the new tank i just havent taken it out

You don't need algae eating fish unless you really have an algae problem. And in a new tank you won't have such a problem, no idea why they sold you those.

And again, if this tank is new you shouldn't have any snails so them selling you the loaches to get rid of snails you don't even have seems like they took you for a bit of ride there.

Don't get me wrong, the fish will be fine in that size aquarium, but I do think they sold them to you saying they will cure problems you don't even have yet, and may not have at all .

It's a really beautiful tank. You should think about whether you want a few medium centrepiece fish like angels or rainbows for example, or a big shoal of small fish like tetras or rasboros or barbs..

A big shoal of Praecox rainbows with their shimmery pale blue sheen would look really beautiful in that tank I think. Around 10-12 would be great.

Also, you will need more than two khulie loaches, as they are very social little fish and prefer bigger groups. In a 65 gallon you can easily accomodate another four Khulies to make a nice group who'll gaggle around on the bottom together.

yeah they said i should get them cause plants usually carry some snails and i do have a few in there now just from the swords i bought but yeah i think i want some center peice fish and maybe a school of smaller so should i do a school of mollies or maybe guarmis and i dont know what the bigger fish would be

Gouramis aren't really a schooling fish to be honest. You could try a group of Angelfish or Raindowfish for something really nice as a centrepiece, with maybe some Cardinal tetras or silvertip tetras?

Mollies would also be great smaller fish , but unless you want to be ovverun with babies in a few months I'd suggest getting males only.

mollies arent really shoaling fish neither are gouramis. a shouls of neons or cardinals would look good or i agree with angelfish, they are good centerpiece fish.

Thing is, angelfish and neons aren't often a good mix. The angels have a tendency to occasionally eat neons when large enough, and for such a recently cycled tank neons are not the best choice as they're rather weak now.

Cardinals are bigger and a little more robust but it seems everyon haqs cardinals or neons. I'd go for something different. Black skirt tetras maybe now I've though about it.


If it were me I'd go for a pair of angels for a centrepiece and around 10 praecox rainbows, 4 more khulies and LOTS more plants.
