I have a well established 240 litre juwel Rio fish Tank.

Up to yesterday i had fish in this tank that i have had for nearly 4 years (Bala Shark, 3 x Clown Loach) but all of a sudden they all started dying.

In the last 48 hours i have lost The Shark, all the Loaches, a Cory Dora Sterbae, and all the Tiger barbs (which i believe are the culprits), and i have several others that are all dying (Botia's and Fire Eel)

The only thing different is that 10 days ago i introduced six Tiger Barbs (from a local specialist shop)within a week they showed signs of White Spots "Itch" which i am treating but to no avail.

Any suggestions? Will i have a case to complain to the Fish Shop? can i prove that the Tigers were the culprits?

Thanks for any suggestions

Graham

Have you done a water change recently?

Sure no one has touched the tank?

All of your equipment still working? Heater, filter etc.

Yes regular water changes,

Nothing out of the ordinary, all equipment working perfectly.

The only difference in the tank in the last 2 months are the new Tiger Barbs.......

This leads me to think that these little buggers are the culprits!!

I don't mean do you do regular changes. I mean DID you do one recently.

Your tap water isn't always a constant, sometimes there will be work on a line which alters it's stats, and sometimes the water board just decide to change things.

This may well be your culprit if you happened to do a water change shortly before the deaths started.

you can use the same test kits
to do your tap water as you use
on your tank

Just got back from the Specialty Shop "Goldfish Bowl" in Oxford where my water was confirmed as being perfect. They obviously wouldn't take responsibility for supplying me Potentially infected fish.

Advice given "continue to treat for White Spot do a water change after the 2nd treatment, then go back to them to restock" "I think Not".

Maybe this is the chance for me to clean tank completely and set up a salt water Tank.

you need to buy a test kit i don't
trust lfs notice how they said go
back to them for restocking have you
only ever brought fish off them by the
way what were the stats after they tested it

What the med called you are using.
Did you use the full dose.
Have you increased aeration.
Did you raise temp to 30.
Have you removed black carbon from the filter.

Are the fish showing any signs of darting, or gasping at the surface of tank, or laboured breathing.

As i was away on business, the only shop open when i arrived home was Pets at home. I brought Interpet white spot treatment, dosage was 10ml for my tank size (mixed with half liter of water, added evenly throughout tank). Carbon filter removed, and water temperature also increased. Second dose due 4 days after first. Aeration is no issue as i have 2 airstones running perfectly well.

The fish now seem to have stopped dying, although the majority have perrished over the last week, left now is a Common Pleco (which apparently dont tend to suffer from white spot) a Lace Gourami, and a couple of small suckers (not sure of the names)

Need to look at your water stats. Also how many fish and which type were in the tank.
How big were the fish.

Once whitespot invades the gills it can be a fast killer.
I'm wondering if your tank was overstocked.

Tank 240lt
Fish
Common Pleco (4yrs)
1 x Bala Shark (4yrs)
3 x Clown Loach (4yrs)
2 x small suckers (3yrs)
1 x Fire Eel (2yrs)
2 x Botia Loach
1 x Lace Gourami
6 x Tiger Barbs

Maybe this is overstocked? But this tank has been well established for 4 years with no major problems until the Tigers were introduced 2 weeks ago, maybe that was where we went over the limit?

Tank has now been treated for the 2nd time and no more deaths have occured, will do a partial water change in a couple of days and then treat again in a week.

Your water stats will tell you if the filter not coping with your stocking.

Need to look at the size of the fish?
