Hi,

I have an AquaEl Hexa 60 tank. holds approx 15Gal, not huge but i didn't want a huge task on my hands. Tank is Which of the following is better suited, etc? I want a colour and variety variation but not overstocked to the point of cleaning constantly

tank.jpg

I currently have:

1 x male blue guppy
1 x tuxedo platy
1 x red wag platy
1 x swordtail

I was thinking of:

OPTION 1:
-----------------------------------------
4 x neon tetra's
2 x male blue guppy
1 x red wag platy
1 x tuxedo platy
1 x swordtail

OPTION 2:
-----------------------------------------
3 x male blue guppies
2 x tuxedo platies
1 x red wag platy
1 x swordtail

I would love the tetra's to be in the tank as the colour and speed of them things (:D) but not sure about the stock.

Any advice?

Thanks

Richard

Try and do it your self ;) . The rule is 1 inch per gallon
Platy=2inch
guppy=2inch
sowrdtail=5inch
Neon Tetra=2inch

ok you can have around 15" of fish in that tank, the options you gave come out as

OPTION 1:
-----------------------------------------
4 x neon tetra's - 4"
2 x male blue guppy - 2"
1 x red wag platy - 2"
1 x tuxedo platy - 2"
1 x swordtail - 3"

13" total

OPTION 2:
-----------------------------------------
3 x male blue guppies - 3"
2 x tuxedo platies - 4"
1 x red wag platy - 2"
1 x swordtail - 3"

12" total

so both well within your stocking guidelines in terms of boiload and numbers of fish so your on the right lines.

i wouldn't put the neons in there though, hex tanks don't give much swimming room and neons like a bit of space so I'd leave those out.

for guppies, platies and swordies you need to either have all male, all female or 1m:2f (within species groups) if you do go for some male and female be prepared for lots and lots of fry!

providing you get the right balance of m/f i think option 2 is best

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I tried my best to come up with those options :D

is there any other fish like the cardinal/neon tetra's that have that sharp bright colour and are 1" to fit around them other fish?

Thanks

Richard

lots!! however you'll have the same problem with most of them. if you google rasbora and tetra you'll find lots of small colourful species that stay around 1".

however nearly all of them (in fact i can't think of any exceptions) will like lots of swimming room and to be in a fairly large group (6+) so you will probably run into the same problem again.

start by looking through the fish index on this site characins covers all tetras and cyprinids covers rasboras, the profiles should give some idea of swimming space and tank size required.
