I stopped in the non-fish pet store to check out their offerings. Here's what they had:

1) A bunch of sad looking Bettas in small bowls. None swimming around at all.
2) A pair of male Bettas together in a small tank - fins looked chopped up, one was flaring at the other, but neither seemed to have the interest or energy to continue their battles.
3) A few goldfish in a small bowl that was warm to the touch. It had a pretty powerful light on top.
4) A tank full of baby somethings that included about a dozen dead babies stuck to the filter intake and covered in some sort of moss.
5) Several big Oscars in a small tank. Didn't look too happy.

And this is the place where all the fish are about 4x as much as the LFS a few blocks up. I've never bought anything here except for a 3 pack of filter cartridges when my LFS was closed and I was out.

OMG!! I just stepped into a never visited before local LFS and was completely saddened and disgusted that a majority of the fish tanks were completely corroded with algea, and not the green kind...the brownish, black and revolting colors you would never want to see in your tank. There was also floaters and feces in most of the tanks. They were using undergavel filters and obviously for a long time. Of course it's more cost effective that way, but not healthy as sole filtration. If you can't afford proper filtration and maintain clean and healthy stock then do NOT operate a tropical fish store.

Gross and abusive to nature!!

This place has been around for a long time and I can't believe it's been remotely successful. I would never buy a fish from that vendor no matter what. I can't believe anyone else would for that matter......all hobbyist advise against buying from such places. Not to mention prices too high for merchandise and fish.

I am disgusted by their ability. If they want to be a pet store, thy need to look after their pets properly. How would they like it of someone put then into a small space with no care, and left them to suffer? That's the problem with pet stores nowadays. They don't care about the animals, as long as they get money out of it.

There needs to be a forum soley dedicated to complaining about tank stocking.

I'm in Australia, is there a governing body you can complain to there about that?  Here there is and I would not hesitate to report such a place.  That's horrible :(

Well, we do have our nice sparkling new Reviews section, where you can review the stores in question. So long as you phrase it the right way, you can name the store. If you have a look, you can see how I phrased my negative review, such that it is legally postable.

However, can I just point out that this thread is older than one of my kids, raking up ancient threads is a bit of a no-no, so I'm going to lock it.
