First Tank, Project :)

you will need ti spend some quality time searching google for uk breeders or local/national betta clubs. It can be painful but well worth the reward when you find a good quality betta x

There's a beautiful turquoise crowntail on eBay atm that I adore... Lovely fish!

I realised I didn't plug my heater in properly last night  But I've just done it an hour or so ago and my thermometer tells me my water is at 79 degrees. Does this sound okay?

that's 26c, notch it up to 80 (27c) x

Ooh, there is life in the tank. I noticed a tiny (2mm) snail on one of the silk plants. Must have come from the Cambosa I'm guessing, but I've had that nearly two weeks and this is the first time I've noticed it -_-

Never once thought I could get excited about a snail

don't worry, it was most prob an egg on the plant x

After consulting the freshwater hitch-hikers post, I'm doing the right thing by leaving it right? :)

yeah, they are fine, might munch on your live plants, if it gets too much of a bother, you can always take it to a lfs x

Did a 20% water change and moved one of my silk plants and the cambosa back a little bit. Also added some garden pebbles (cleaned thoroughly!)

He is here :) My friend got him for my birthday, not ideal I know as the tank hasn't been up and running long but with lots of water changes (20% every other day?) he should be okay!

He is so cute, very interactive and interested in what's going on. Difficult to photograph though! My camera doesn't like focusing on him at all! Here's some pics for you anyway :) His name is Casper.

And last of all, my favourite! Love his little face.

Casper died 2 days after I got him :( Didn't want to say. I was really upset, still feel really guilty. Got the water tested and it had really high nitrites but we couldn't figure out why - fish shop guy said it could have been down to spray deoderant I used in my room? I've been only spraying stuff in the bathroom since!

I haven't got a new one yet. Just been running the tank and adding fish food to keep the bacteria working. Just in the last couple of days I've noticed some brown algae growing on the silk plants and the bigger pebbles - are these okay?

Really sorry to hear about your loss  Don't feel guilty though, these things sometimes happen. I lost my first two bettas, both within two days of buying them. The brown algae is diatoms; this is normal in a new setup and it will eventually go away. It's triggered by ammonia. It is easy to clean off decor and stuff, just wipe if off with a cloth or something.

Are you testing the water to see what the stats are? When do you think you'll be ready to get a new one?

Ahh okay. Water change tomorrow then! I have a nitrite testing kit, but not one for ammonia... I literally just bought one off eBay! He will be here on Tuesday or Wednesday. I am aware I will have to do big water changes to keep down the ammonia and nitrite levels when he gets here :) I'm pretty sure it was the deoderant that got poor Casper... I won't be making that mistake again!

Here the new guy is.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250689825098&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
