I still think all my fish are mollys although I'm new to livebearers and no expert; platys do look a whole lot like mollys. The little 1" guy still has a lot of growing to do, so we'll see; he's cute either way.)

No, it's not good for them at all. In fact, 80% of dyed fish live dramatically shorter lives than natural-coloured fish. Good on you not for buying them.
