First Fish Into A Cycling Tank

Hi, starting to cycle a 180 litre tank, appreciate that fishless cyling is now seen as the best method.

How long would people recommend before putting the first fish in, and what is seen as sturdy and ideal fish to put in first.

It sounds like you intend on trying fishless cycling . However if this is the case the length of time before adding your first fish is nothing to do with opinions or choice - you need to follow the fishless cycling instructions and when the cycle is complete and you've done your last water change then you are ready. And also at that stage because the tank is cycled, you don't need to worry about which fish are nore hardy than others.... . Just get what you intend stocking with.

Impression I get is everyone would now recommend fishless cycling. But I would like to put some in quite early to keep the children happy (as well as myself...). But I don't want to cause death or distress. Just what maybe the right ones to put in first, and after what timespan. Seen someone say platties are very hardy.

Fair enough - cycling with fish is OK too.... that's what I did with my first tank.

I think platys are reasonably hardy, but can't be certain. Perhaps someone else can help. What I used were danios - reasonably attractive and very tough and hardy. I still have most of mine!

im cyclyleing my tank with a zebra danio right now, i put him in about 5 hours after the water filled my tank and so far hes doing exellent, i didint find him to atractive at first but as i watch him i really start to like him and plan on getting more!!
