What's the problem with the females then, weak breeding?

No sure if im honest they just never seem to last long even in perfect conditions. I would guess its a problem from them being inbreed/overbreed to create a different colour strain but like i said im not sure.

Worry, no. Something to keep an eye on, for sure.

Keep a close eye on it, see if it appears to be getting worse/better or any changes in general. For all we know it could be a natural deformity.

Sadly the female died today. i couldnt find her yesterday and today i soptted her it lookied like she had a hole in her head between the eyes. but i saw her swimm very quickly around the surface of the water and then just stop and sink to the bottom. i then put her in a net suspended in the water. my dad rang me and said that she had died.

is it worth trying to get my money back?

Was it mail order or bought from lfs?? If it was lfs then yes get your cash back. Clearly a weak fish, pitting aswell sounds like a deficiency which can't really be your fault.

Just to be on the safe side, what's the water stats?

Hi it was a LFS im going to go back when it opens after christmas. will post test results when i have a min thanks

Sorry you lost one. I hope they were in a QT tank. They looked to me like they had something before you brought them home. In one photo it looks like pop eye but hard to tell from the photos.

I would look for fish from a differant store.

They weren't in a QT =( i do need to get one soon. Yeah she seemed to have some rotting or hole between here eyes and the eye seemed lose/falling out.

i went back to the fish shop and they happily replaced the fish so i now have a new female appisto who is currently acclimatizing. Hopefully she will last a little longer, she dosen't have any visible problems fingers crossed.

yeah ive read up on them abit i dont think i would put africans in anything except a biotype but would love to get one set up one day.

africans also tend to be extremely nasty- except for labs and powder blues.
