Firemouth,angel,kissing Gourami

i never said i agree but maybe if he has 5 FM in a tank then yea but the only thing i think that will be piling on the bio-load is the kissing gourami but as long as water changes are good and you have good filtration there is no problem as i can see also 5 tiger barbs arent gonan be the messiest boi load

Foley Maybe i have taken it the wrong way because that is exactly my thoughts on the subject.

If he has five Firemouths in a tank it would have to be around 6 foot anyway because of territory restrictions it would be all out war.

Unless he is keeping juveniles which is even more stupid saying they produce as much mess as a oscar.

I kept a pair of Oscars and a common plec in a 5ftx2ftx2ft tank before and the mess was horrendous, they had white sand originally and it was black inside a few months (i had to change it to gravel),I had a external and 2 internals and i still only fed him once a day max and that was a small amount Cichlid pellets...i had to do water changes 3 times a week to keep it clean.

I have kept both a much bigger Kissing Gourami and a Firemouth before with loads of platys, swordtails and mollys and 2 juvenile clown loaches in a 4ftx1ftx1ft foot tank and i had no mess whatsoever, just the usual gravel clean and weekly water change.

The reason i made the thread was because i have never kept any type of shoaling fish with a Firemouth before and i was concerned about how my Angel would get on with them.

I'm aware of stocking restrictions but IMO that doesent apply to this set up with just 3 6" fish and 5 tiddlers.

oscars are a ultra messy fish my mate had his oscar in a 4ft tank and it was scummy with bits of food lying around and poo the size of a sausage but the kissing gourami is probably the only messiest fish in there of course the FM will produce a fair bit of mess but nothing on an oscar and liek i said water changes are a must with all tanks and good filtration get that sorted and theres nothing to worry about

Of course,Water changes are not a problem for me and never have been.

I honestly think it would be worse if i had a ton of livebearers and tetras than it would be with 3 Larger fish as the sh!t gets everywhere with things like Platys.

And i totally agree about Oscars, thats why i sold them!! to much work to keep them happy and keep ammonia down unless you have a 8ft tank with 3 external filters.

i have never been interested in oscars i prefer jack dempseys they are my fav cichlid:p

Never kept a JD before although they do look nice,I think Jaguars are my Fave new world Cichlid and Frontosa's from my Africans...i got a soft spot for FM's and Kribs to :p

Not getting into the argument here, but just wondered if you had considered maybe something like a giant danio instead of TB's? Tiger barbs can be nippy and could (not saying they will) annoy the angel with its long fins, especially if they arent kept in a large group 8+ to spread their aggression between themselves, whereas Giant danios arent so nippy, wouldnt need as large a shoal, roughly the same size " wise, same bio load and pretty fast to avoid any problems with the FM. Just a suggestion :)

best idea in this thread minx never thought of them i tought they would be bit big

I could be wrong, but think they top out at 4", but happy to be corrected if Im wrong :)

Or another idea, cherry barbs, not nippy, peaceful, shoaling, but again quick enough to avoid trouble.

Cherrys would be awesome but to small, the FM or KG would eat them.

Got a bigger tank off my mate today (60 gallon) with a mature Fluval 404,saved most of his water to,filled the rest of it up with my tank and went and bought a Adult Angel,Juvenile Gold Severum and 5 Black Widows.

Also got 5 Bristleys coming.

My other tanks filled up awaiting tons of livebearer fry.
