ok here's my criteria:

5-6'' adult size
kept in pairs
safe with small schoolers (zebra danios)
hardy
safe with soft leaved plants (not diggers)

any suggestions? this will be for a 45 US gal semiplanted.

My 2 favourites fit that. keyhole cichlids 4-5" My male is 4". Blue acara 6-8".

i seen spme keyholes at the pet shop. they were so tiny! lol. do you think that they may get swarmed by the danios?

No way they are tough fish. Mine chances my Rasboras around but he is bigger. Don't worry they grow. If you can get some DO IT!!!! They are great fish I can't seem to find any. The one I got was like a one time deal never to be seen again. So he is my pride and joy.

oh. thats not good. i only have a measely 10 gal right now with 5 danios. i'm saving up $$$ for a nice tank. i saw them at a chain store, so i guess my chances are fairly good to see them again. :D

Blue acara won't go for the danios? Would a gt eat danios?

I agree with both keyhole and blue acara being cool fish.

small schoolers rather limits your options. the acara with zebra danios would be very risky imo. once it reaches a certain size they could well end up on the menu.

GT is a no go with anything else in the tank and 45g a little small so thats a no go.

A blue acara would be fine, singularly in a 45 with dithers, may snack on the danios if it could catch them, however if bought young you may get away with it.

Or IMO 2 rams (german blue or bolivian) and a couple of keyholes or apistogrammas and keyholes would be good in that size tank with the danios and some praecox rainbows :good:

i would say rainbow cichlids would suit and if your stuggling to find some i have some for sale all different sizes they are a stunning fish especially when courting pm me anyone who is intrested :good:

Keyholes are very common around here. I have one myself, it's so shy!

Every fish is different my keyhole is far from shy. He comes out to say hi every time I go to look at him. I forgot about the rainbow cichlids they are cool if you could fish d some they would be good.
