Finalising My Stocking Plan

I havent been around here for a very long time and my tank got delayed for months on end due to some stuff.

Anyway, im back now and getting back into it.
Also, for those who remember my blue betta, his still alive and thriving in his little tank.

So back to the main issue. I have a 20 gallon tank which will be filtered solely by UG.
My stocking plan so far is:

1 dwarf gourami
12 harlequins
6 peppered corys
2 platies.

Is there anything I could add? anything that needs removing? Could I replace the gourami with a betta?

Also contemplating a box filter, thoughts?

Undergravel filter? Get rid of the cories. They should only be kept in sand substrate. And UG filters alone are rather disgusting, I wouldn't doubt the cory's would get bacterial infections from being on the bottom of the tank shuffling for food.

Honestly, I'd rethink having UG filtration altogether, If you're not overstocked, as you won't be, a small internal filter would be much better.

Then you could have sand and plants (plants don't like UG) and your cories, as I think your stocking plan is very nice and should work well.

The stocking plan is great. Get a good HOB filter in place of the UG and then you are golden. I think cories are far better off on sand than gravel, but that doesn't mean that you can't have cories in gravel. I've read several articles regarding cories and gravel and the most recent consensus I've found states that the worn down barbels are not a result of the gravel slowly wearing them down, but a sign of other issues, generally related to water quality. For me though, I can't understand why anyone would want gravel though. Sand just looks so much better to me and is far easier to keep clean, PLUS it is ridiculously CHEAP by comparison to gravel.

Thats great news, now I can use my bettas current tank water to help with the cycling, and put the filter medium from his filter into a larger box filter that will filter my 20 gal and help with cycling, and my 20 gal will have sand, and my betta will be its first resident.

The tank water wont help, it doesnt contain the beneficial bacteria.

the water my betta is currently living wont have beneficial bacteria? Really?

No the water wouldn't be a great help, the beneficial bacteria is in the filter media, if the beneficial bacteria lived in the water and you done a 100% water change, the bacteria would still be there .

Hey, i'm not going to comment on your tank, as I don't have a whole lot of experience with different setups yet, but i will say that you would probably benefit from reading through the beginner's centre here. Good Luck!

Just a note on the platys - get the same sex unless you want loads of babies! Personally I'd get 2 males. They may bicker a bit at first but once they decide which one of them is in charge they should be fine.

Well usually you'll only have around 1-2 fry that survive inthe main tank per drop cuz they'd get eaten.
