ive noticed my gouramis main fin and tail is getting thin i did a quick water test when i went home and evrything was 0 apart from my ammonia was .50 but didnt have time to do a waterchange as i was on lunch

would the ammonia be the problem here or is this something worse ?

should i treat the tank or just keep doing daily W/C until he's better

the main cause of fin rot is caused by other fish attacking them by nipping at their tails get some melafix it wil help and also make sure u have good bacteria levels in the tank if the fish has red swollen looking markings around the base of the fins then ya must get on to it straight away as it can kill them

its got no marks on it but its stitting on the bottom most of the time unless i add food

its top fin is just loosing skin inbetween the the spines it just looks like bits of boney spikes sticking out its only small atm but i dont want it getting worse

well u are going to have to quarantine him as the other fish are picking on him do get ahold of the melafix wich will work on him if he isnt too far gone and the markings that u said he has around his dorsal fin will become red and inflamed soon once u have taken him out of the tank do a full clean of the tank and change around ur orderments so the fish will lose territory of the tank so when he gets better he can get his own dominance of the tank.....

ive got a small 20L with 1 bristlenose in atm as i want to sell it because its too big for my 70 L and keeps digging everything up im hoping my lfs will take him

would this be ok to treat him in?

yeah thats perfect enough for a quarantine tank to treat him with melafix u need to add half a cap full once a day till u see improvement.
if u can keep an eye on him for the first few days as some fish even tho treated properly with the right stuff wil not pull through with finrot but if gotten to in time he should start to swim around (try to) and the swelling around the dorsal fin will start to clear up and u will notice his fins forming up again make sure with the melafix that u turn the filter off when u add it as it creates a few bubbles lol it will look like ya fish is having a bubble bath lol
