Hi im almost almost in the last stages of buying a house (only 25%part buy but thats good enough for me after 5 years of renting) and so im really starting to plan my next fish tank (which will be the main big one for the lounge).

il be getting a 5 maybe 6' tank and have almost decided what i want. i have been toying with the idea of central americans or some small odballs but thruthfully my passion is for cyprinids so i am 99% sure that i wont to go down that route.

what ever i do i will throw everything into it i.e filement barb biotope or as close to a biotope as poss because rather annoyingly i hate mixing fish from different continents ( always end up shooting myself in the foot in terms of tankmates i want)

has any body ever kept filiment barbs if so do you have any pics of your fish. depending on tank size i may end up with a group of arulius barbs instead.

this vid on youtube that isnt of my fish really have inspired me to go for filiments. my only worry is that they need so much room. what do you guys think?

also if any body has any ideas about tankmates that are biotope correct or close to i would be very happy to hear them

I was about to say i always check there when researching fish but i clicked anyway and found that they can be found in brackish conditions which i didnt know so i obvously never checked this site for these fish lol

Not sure about filament barbs but ive got arulius barbs and theyre very nice fish and would recommend them

I'm not sure on the biotope but mine often shoal with my silver dollars ( also cyprinids :hey: ) and seem to get on very well :good:

They're around 3-4 inches

I'll get a vid or pics again I've got some as there in with my clown barbs and the colours usually very nice but they were abit washed out as I'd just changed my sand

Filament barbs are very active as adults and need a large tank and quite hard to get hold of. I have bought a few recently but there aren't many about. I fancy arulius barbs too but again not many places have them available.

Hey Bae,

Silver dollars are characins, not cyprinids.

Cheers

The first 2 I got from a Madidenhead aquatics, must have been returned from a customer - they are 4 and 5 inches. 3 little ones - about 2 inches from a lfs, and they were just a lucky find. Nowhere seems to stock them or be able to order them.

I have noticed the absence of many cyprinids from the UK stock lists, and those that are there featured many "mucked about" examples rather than natural. I always kept Barbs and Rasboras, classic fish shaped fish, but it seems that cichlids and cats are the "de jure" of todays shops.

I had a small group of Filament Barbs in a 4' they shared with some gelius. Nice fish, easy to keep, easy to feed.
