i have a 4 foot tank 48by15by12 but only have the fluval 3plus pump right now i cant afford a bigger pump but a have a fluval 2plus in the house. i was just wondering is it ok to use both the pumps in my tank just to i get a new filter.

Yep, use both of them, no problem. You can leave them on when you get a bigger filter too, to make it easier transferring the beneficial bacteria, if the media wont go into your new one anyway... Though I'm sure you'd be able to cut the fluval media into pieces to make it fit

Using both filters together will be fine for establishing a cycle. If you control the fish population properly, that may be all of the filtration that the tank needs.
