Hi everyone,

I know this is going to sound like a dumb question. I've bought my first aquarium today, should I leave the filter and airstone working 24/7 or turn them off overnight?

Thanks,

Pete.

They should run 24/7/365.

Have a read through the Beginner's Resource Center, specifically about cycling the tank. Welcome and enjoy the hobby. Its VERY rewarding!

Link in sig. ;)

The filter needs to be running 24/7 as it is what processes harmful ammonia waste into mostly harmless nitrate (after you have cycled). Make sure you have the outlet pointed so it ripples the surface of the water as this is what will keep the water oxygenated so your fish can breathe.

As long as the surface is rippling, there will be sufficient oxygen so the airstone isn't actually required at all, so you can have it on as much or as little as you like.

The filter must run 24/7.

The airstone is optional, as long as the filter is rippling the water surface.

As you're new to the hobby, can I direct you to our beginner's resource centre? The link is in my sig. It's full of articles that you might find useful

If the filter is too noisy, and it makes you want to turn it off, you can get a quieter one! The airstone is optional.
