If you shake the filter cartridge , you maybe can hear the carbon bits rattling. If your cartridge has carbon, you can remove it by making a horizontal slit near the top of the filter material and then turn it upside down and shake out the carbon bits into a trash bin. Carbon removes meds, so you don't want any carbon in your filter while medicating.

What exactly is inside your filter?

Some filters have sponge, or filter wool/floss or ceramic noodles while others have cartridges which are sort of packets on a frame and full of bits. These cartridges are full of carbon.

If your filter has these cartridges and nothing else, you can carefully slit them open and empty the carbon out and put the empty bag back. If there is something else besides the cartridge, just take the cartridge out. However, if there's nothing but sponge or noodles, you don't have carbon.

Thankyou very much ,, I have recently lost 7 fish ,, and do not want to lose anymore your info is much appreciated ,, should I add more medication ?

how long did you have the meds in the tank along with carbon in the filter? If more than a day, perhaps do a 75% water change and then add 3/4 of the recommended dose of meds to be sure you have a proper dose of meds in the tank. . Hope your remaining fish survive.

It was only like 3 hours ,, still debating what to do ,, and thankyou so do I,, I love my lil 1

You do not need medication to treat fin rot.

Fin rot is caused by bad water quality, and can easily be fixed with diligent daily water changes. (I would suggest 60%+ per day, for a week, until things improve)

But, if you are set on medication, then I would suggest to remove any active carbon from the water. That way the medication can do it’s full job.

I started doing water changes on sunday ,, also added filter aid and aquarium salt ,, every water change o and tap safe ,, fish went from hanging out next to heater to sitting at bottom of tank ,, gradually looking worse I'm fairly new to tropical fish, but feel I'm learning day by day ,, love this site so glad I found it
