I have 5 three week old molly fry in a 5 gallon tank. The current from the filter seems to be a bit strong for them. Is it necessary to have the filter on? If so, what can I do to buffer the current? They seem to struggle against it. They are probably about a half inch long right now.

Thanks!

This is often done in betta tanks to reduce the current; http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/84710-best-filter-current-killing-method-ive-found/

Thanks. I'll try that. Had to turn the filter off an hour ago. Have the bubbler going. And I have an empty brisk tea bottle right next to me. Thanks!

Can someone reccomend a good and quiet external filter for my 260 litre tank. I have a internL fluval u2 and u3. I also have a some plants that constantly make mess. So when it comes to cleaning my filter out. It all ends up back in the water as im taking the filter out. Im looking for something in the price range of 40 to 80 pounds. I plan to keep my u3 ajd replace the u2 with an external one. Please only recomend something if you have one! As noise is very important for me. It must be ultra quiet because noise bugs me and isnt good for the fish. thanks.

Thanks again. Literally, just in time. My mickey mouse platy is now in the process of giving birth. I "rescued" 8 fry from the community tank. Put mom and the babies in the fry tank. Mom is in the breeder's net. Cut holes in the bottom for the fry to escape but she cannot. The molly fry are only 3 weeks old, too small to eat the platy fry.

Fluval 305's ect just have a search around.

My own favorite method to avoid sucking up fry is to place some filter sponge material over the filter inlet like this.

It looked like this on my desktop before I cut a slit in the end and slipped it over the inlet tube.
