Filter Wool? Is It Sufficient To Colonise Beneficial Bacteria?

Hi All,

I normally use filter sponge in my filters but recently, I got a box of 'Supa' filter wool and started using that instead in my spare filters (for use if I ever need filter material in an emergency)

Now, I'm starting to second guess myself and am wondering if perhaps it is incorrect to use filter wool for the purpose of colonising beneficial bacteria?

Is regular filter sponge better for this purpose or does it matter....will they both do the same thing?

I would say that the bacteria should colonize on filter wool assume you are not going to be removing this wool. I currently use 2 packs in each of my filters. 1 pack in each filter gets replaced every 3-4 weeks, this pack of wool "cleans" the water of solid objects where as the second pack is what I use for the bacteria to grow on for the tank.
